Cells and Energy Chapter 4
Key Concept (Section 4. 1 page 100) § All cells need chemical energy
All cells need chemical energy (p 100) § Most of this energy comes from a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP) § ATP is a molecule that transfers energy from the breakdown of food molecules to cell processes
We eat food to give our bodies energy!!! (p 101) § ATP helps this process § Eat Food § Body breaks down the food (digestion) § The energy in this digested food is then transferred to your body using ATP
ENERGY from FOOD phosphate removed Breathing, Moving, heart pumping, digesting, thinking, etc.
Different foods contain different amounts of energy(p 102) § Lipids contain the most energy, but carbohydrates are used the most for energy
What about plants? § Do plants eat and digest food? § So where do plants get their energy from?
Key Concept (Section 4. 2) § The overall process of photosynthesis produces sugars that store chemical energy. (p 103)
Plants make their own food § Photosynthesis is a process that captures energy from sunlight to make sugars that store chemical energy. § Photosynthesis changes light energy into chemical energy.
Plants are Producers § Since plants make their own food through photosynthesis, they are considered producers (they produce energy) § Animals are consumers because they eat plants and other animals (they consume energy)
How do plants make their own food? § Plants use a specific chemical reaction. § Remember… reactants products § Plants take in carbon dioxide (CO 2) and water (H 2 O) [reactants] § Plants use and reuse light and enzymes § Plants make a sugar (C 6 H 12 O 6) and oxygen (O 2) [products]
How do plants make their own food? § 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 § Light and enzymes make this reaction take place
How do plants make their own food? § In words… § Carbon dioxide and water, with the help of light and enzymes, produce sugar (chemical energy) and oxygen
Why do plants need photosynthesis? § Since plants cannot eat, plants can use this sugar (produced during photosynthesis) and ATP to provide energy for plant processes
Where does photosynthesis occur? § In plants… § But where in plants? § The chloroplasts within the plant cell § Plants are green because of chlorophyll. § Chlorophyll, found in chloroplasts, absorbs the light energy from the sun.
