Cell Structure & Function http: //koning. ecsu. ctstateu. edu/cell. html
Cells • All living things are made up of cells. • Cells are the smallest working units of all living things.
Definition of Cell A cell is the smallest unit that is capable of performing life functions.
Examples of Cells Amoeba Proteus Plant Stem Bacteria Red Blood Cell Nerve Cell
“Typical” Animal Cell membrane Cytoplasm Nucleus Vacuole http: //web. jjay. cuny. edu/~acarpi/NSC/images/cell. gif Mitochondrion
“Typical” Plant Cell wall Cell membrane Chloroplasts Nucleus Vacuole Cytoplasm http: //waynesword. palomar. edu/images/plant 3. gif
Cell Parts Organelles
Surrounding: Cell Membrane (plant & animal) • Outer membrane of cell that controls movement in and out of the cell • Double layer http: //library. thinkquest. org/12413/structures. html
Inside the cell: Nucleus (plants & animals) • Directs cell activities • Separated from cytoplasm by nuclear membrane • Contains genetic material - DNA
Vacuoles (plant & animal) • Membrane-bound sacs for storage, digestion, and waste removal • Contains water solution • Help plants maintain shape http: //library. thinkquest. org/12413/structures. html
Cytoplasm (plant & animal) • • Jelly-like mixture Surrounded by cell membrane Contains hereditary material Helps the cell stay healthy
Surrounding: Cell Wall (plant) • Most commonly found in plant cells & bacteria • Supports & protects cells http: //library. thinkquest. org/12413/structures. html
Chloroplast (plant) • Contains green chlorophyll “makes plants green” • Makes food for plant cells http: //library. thinkquest. org/12413/structures. html
Inside the cell: Mitochondria (plant & animal) • Produces/Releases energy through chemical reactions – breaking down fats & carbohydrates • Controls level of water and other materials in cell • Recycles and decomposes proteins, fats, and carbohydrates http: //library. thinkquest. org/12413/structures. html

No Cell wall cell membranes nuclei cytoplasm Rigid cell membrane mitochondria lysosomes Have chloroplast Cell wall Large vacuoles Make their own food Flexible cell membrane no chloroplast Smaller vacuoles
Lysosomes (plant &animal) “Digestion” system of cells. One of its functions is the digestion of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins into small molecules that can be used by the rest of the cell. Lysosomes are also involved in the breakdown of organelles that have outlived their usefulness.
Organelle Simile Book • Write similes for the following organelles: nucleus, chromosomes, cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, vacuole, vesicle, and mitochondrion. 1 PAGE PER ORGANELLE EXAMPLES: • A cell membrane is like a guard at the door, it decides what comes in the cell and what goes out of the cell. • The nucleolus is like a boss, it gives directs the cell’s activities
