CELL STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION Notes
ANIMAL CELLS Eukaryotic Do not have a definite shape.
PLANT CELLS Eukaryotic Hold a definite shape due to a cell wall.
ORGANELLE Any organized or specialized structures within a living cell
COMMON STRUCTURES CELL MEMBRANE the thin layer of protein and fat that surrounds the cell The cell membrane is semipermeable, allowing some substances to pass into the cell and blocking others.
COMMON STRUCTURES CYTOPLASM the jellylike material outside the cell nucleus in which the organelles are located
COMMON STRUCTURES NUCLEUS The nucleus controls many of the functions of the cell and contains DNA (in chromosomes). Contains the nucleolus The nucleolus creates ribosomes for the cell. The nucleus is surrounded by the nuclear membrane.
COMMON STRUCTURES RIBOSOMES Creates protein (protein synthesis)
COMMON STRUCTURES MITOCHONDRIA spherical to rod-shaped organelles The mitochondrion converts the energy stored in glucose into ATP (adenosine triphosphate) for the cell. Makes usable energy!
COMMON STRUCTURES GOLGI BODIES also called the Golgi apparatus or golgi complex a flattened, layered, sac-like organelle that looks like a stack of pancakes and is located near the nucleus The Golgi body packages proteins and carbohydrates into membrane-bound vesicles for "export" from the cell.
COMMON STRUCTURES ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM transports materials through the cell Also called the “ER” Smooth ER Does NOT have ribosomes attached to its sides Rough ER Has ribosomes attached to its sides
COMMON STRUCTURES VACUOLE The vacuole fills with food being digested and waste material that is on its way out of the cell. Storage site
MOSTLY FOUND IN ANIMAL CELLS LYSOSOME also called cell vesicles This is where the digestion of cell nutrients takes place.
PLANT CELLS ONLY CELL WALL a thick, rigid membrane that surrounds a plant cell This layer of cellulose fiber gives the cell most of its support and structure. The cell wall also bonds with other cell walls to form the structure of the plant.
PLANT CELLS ONLY CHLOROPLAST an elongated or disc-shaped organelle containing chlorophyll Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts.
