Cell Division Mitosis
Cell Division • Cell division is when a cell duplicates itself, making two cells out of one • Cell division is how organisms can grow and develop
Cell Division • There are two types of cell division • Mitosis • Meiosis
Mitosis • Mitosis is a form of cell division in which a cell’s nucleus and nuclear material divide to create two identical daughter cells • Only somatic cells undergo mitosis • Somatic cells are all the cells in your body that are not sex cells (eggs and sperm)
Stages of Mitosis • Mitosis is divided into stages: • • • Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokinesis
Interphase • In Interphase… • Cell grows and carries out normal cell processes • DNA replicates (copies itself)
Mitosis - Prophase • In Prophase… • Nuclear membrane disintegrates • DNA condenses into chromosomes • Mitotic spindles begin to form between the poles (opposite ends) of the cell
Mitosis - Metaphase • In Metaphase… • Chromosomes attach to mitotic spindles and align along the equator (middle)
Mitosis - Anaphase • In Anaphase… • Mitotic spindles shorten, moving chromosome strands to opposite poles
Mitosis - Telophase • In Telophase… • Chromosomes reach poles of cell • Nuclear envelope re-forms • Almost two separate cells but the cytoplasm of both cells is attached still
Cytokinesis • In cytokinesis, the cytoplasm is divided to create two distinct daughter cells • In animal cells, a cleavage furrow forms at the equator of the cell and pinches inward until the cell divides in two
