CELL BIOLOGY LAB 1 Laboratory Safety LABORATORY SAFETY
CELL BIOLOGY LAB. 1 Laboratory Safety:
LABORATORY SAFETY: 1. Do not eat, drink, smoke, or apply cosmetics (including lip balm). 2. Wear gloves and a lab coat. 3. Do not bite nails or chew on pens. 4. Do not mouth pipette. 5. Washing and sterilization of glassware and materials. 6. Use water to moisten specimen labels rather than tongue.
LABORATORY SAFETY: 7 - Disinfect all contaminated waste before discarding 8 - Report to appropriate personnel all accidents or exposures to infectious agents 9 - Take special care to avoid injuries with sharp objects such as needles and scalpels 1 1 -Wash hands after working with infectious materials 1 2 -When used Bunsen burner take care should be made and sure it be closed after ending.
POSSIBLE METHODS FOR EXPOSURE TO INFECTIONS: 1. Rubbing the eyes or nose with contaminated hands 2. Inhaling aerosols produced during centrifugation, vortexing, or spills of liquid cultures. 3. Accidentally ingesting microrganisms by putting pens or fingers in the mouth. 4. Suffering percutaneous inoculation, that is, being punctured by a needle stick.
TOOLS AND INSTRUMENTS: § Safety cabinet : safety place to inculation and isolation the microorganisms. § Autoclave : used for sterilization and decontaminated the cultures and solutions. § Incubator : used for refreshing and growthing microorganism. § Centrifuge : for separating the solutions according to molecular weight and it´s gravity. § Water bath : maintain solution and media in liquid state. § Oven : sterilizating glassware , pipette etc.
§ Refrigerators and freezer : keeping the important materials in optimal temperature and cold condition. § Bunsen burner : heating and sterilizing some steal microbiology tools like loop etc. § Scales : like sensitive weighter scales for weighting media base, sugars and other materials. § Glassware : different glassware used in lab. § Chemicals : acids, biochemical reagents, media, stains , salt. § Microscope : used for magnifying the tiny things like bacteria or unicellular organisms that cannot vision by naked eye.
