Think, pair, share What is the history of Black people in the United States?
How did most Black people come to America? ● Most Black people here in the United States are descendants of Africans who were taken from their home and brought here as slaves ● Slaves are people who are forced to work for no money
Slavery ● More than 400, 000 slaves came to America ● About 12 million slaves went to South America and the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica) ● Slavery in America was based on racism: the idea that White people thought they were better than Black people
Slaves were freed in 1863
But there was still a lot of racism!
Carter G. Woodson He decided we needed to celebrate all the great things Black people in America had done! So, he started a Black History Week in 1915
Black History Week changed to Black History Month in the 1960 s There has been so much racism against Black people in America, this month helps to fight against the racism and learn great things Black people have done! http: //www. history. com/topics/blac k-history/black-history-month
