CE 3354 ENGINEERING HYDROLOGY LECTURE YBS EXAM 2
CE 3354 ENGINEERING HYDROLOGY LECTURE YBS: EXAM 2 CONTENT REVIEW
OUTLINE Topics on Exam 2 HEC-HMS workshop (required ability for Exam 2) Exam Date: 5 NOV 15
EXAM FORMAT 50 questions, most are multiple choice, but you will have to show work in selecting your answers for full credit. Run gamut from “what is your favorite color” to “which value below is closest to the discharge from a 50 -yr storm applied to the watershed in Figure …” Questions 38 -50 are HEC-HMS emphasis, and will require you to build a simple HMS model, run it and interpret output. Questions relate to each other – hence Question 39 may use material from earlier questions, so use the exam itself as a tool – don’t reinvent the wheel for each question (assuming you got the earlier question correct – just use the numerical value in the later question)
TOPICS • Definitions (what is a hydrograph? …) • Small watershed – Determine CN for portions and composite CN for entire watershed • Estimate watershed excess (runoff) using composite CN for some value of Raw Precipitation (loss model) • Apply unit hydrograph to estimate a direct runoff hydrograph • Interpret observations from a UH generated DRH to determine a drainage area
TOPICS • Hyetographs • Determine an excess hyetograph using a loss model • Determine a constant intensity from a depth and duration • HEC-HMS questions (what components must all HMS models contain? …. ) • HMS Modeling: • Estimate Tc for a watershed (earlier question gives dimensions) • Build Raw Rain hyetograph for some time interval • Build, configure, run HMS • What is peak Q? , What is total runoff? …
TOPICS • HMS Modeling (continued): • Sketch the hydrograph generated by HEC-HMS for the indicated hydrologic element • Add a reservoir • Add storage-outflow function (data supplied in exam) • Run HMS model • What is Peak Q? , … • Sketch the hydrograph generated by HEC-HMS for the reservoir
HEC-HMS WORKSHOP Quick review for building a simple HMS model • Basin Model • Sub-basin (UH, Loss, Area …. ) • Reservoir • Meterological Model • Control Specifications • Time Series • Hyetograph • Paired Data • Storage-Discharge Function
