CDA 6938/COT 4932 Special Topic: Research in Computer and Network Security (spring’ 06) Class Overview 1
n Tuesday/Thursday 4: 30 pm – 5: 45 pm n Office Hour: 2: 30 pm – 4: 30 pm n CSB 223, czou@cs. ucf. edu n Class webpage: u http: //www. cs. ucf. edu/~czou/CDA 6938 2
Why Am I Teaching This Course? n Computer and Network Security is important u u u n A broad research/application issue Impact on many important applications Become more important as we rely heavily on computer and the Internet Helpful to your study and future career: u u If you plan to conduct computer security research related work If you plan to conduct any research-related work Ø Help you to learn basic steps in conducting research 3
A “Seminar” Course n Focus on cybersecurity-related research n Study research papers, publications n n Students must have active roles: u Present papers in class u Be active in class discussion! u Be active to ask questions in class! Not an introductory class on computer security u u n No lab experiments No introduction on security appliance However, you are not required to have knowledge of computer security beforehand 4
Prerequisite n You must have knowledge of computer networking! u n TCP/IP, packet, Internet (addr. , DNS, routing…) Basic knowledge on: Probability (most research work uses this!) u Software (stack, system call…) u Operating system u 5
Class Grading Policy n Class presentations: 20% n Homework (paper review/summary): 15% n In-class participation/discussion: 15% n Final term project: 50% u Two students as a group 6
Policy on COT 4932 Students n Still get credit for COT 4932 n Have a lower class requirement u Less in-depth research study Ø u Term project does not need to contain novel idea Ø Ø n Paper presentation, homework Survey of a topic Realization of experiments in a published paper Separate grading from CDA 6938 students 7
Topics Covered in Class n Focus mainly on wired Internet security u u u n Internet worm, Internet security measurement Honeypot, Spam, Denial-of-Service, Intrusion Detection Network attack techniques Will also cover: u host-based computer security Ø u Wireless security Ø Ø n Sensor network security issues Wireless LAN security Emerging applications security issues: u n Software security RFID security and privacy More to be added in the following two weeks 8
Term Project n Two students form a group to do term project together A research oriented term project u Project report in the same format as a paper for publish u Learn how to conduct research and write paper u n Form the group and decide the title 6 -8 weeks later 9
Example of Term Project n Simple: u u n Middle: u n Survey of the state-of-art research work in a topic Repeat and realize algorithm/experiments in a published paper Minor improvement of algorithms in published papers Advanced: u Present a novel idea with support from simulation or real experiments Ø u E. g. , success in using an idea from the old area to a new topic Has potential to be developed as a published paper 10
What I know and Do not know n I know most research in Internet security u n Especially on Internet worm research I have some knowledge in: Intrusion detection, software security u Wireless security u n Hence the course will evolve as we go on u I will also learn from this course 11
Class Format n n n Papers are grouped according to topics As we move to a new topic, I will present a brief introduction In each class, two students present two papers Presentation: 25 min u Discussion: 10 min u My summary: 5 min (at the end) u 12
Next Class n I will present two papers of mine in the topic “Internet malware modeling and defense” u u u n n Give you an example on paper presentation Show to ask questions in reading a paper Show to find points to do further research Please glance over these two papers before Thursday class Come ready to ask questions and discuss 13
