Splitter Purpose: 1) Place the individual beam energies on-orbit for the PM Arc (Splitter SX) and retrieve the beams from the PM Arc for aiming on-axis into MLC (Splitter RX) 2) Adjust the beam path for the required time of flight to achieve energy recovery Outline: § Advisory Committee Digest § Splitter overview § Beam trajectories § Beam path adjustment § Configurations and Commissioning § Magnets and Power Supplies § Backup Slides - Mechanical and Vacuum, Instrumentation david. burke@cornell. edu - February 22, 2018 – CBETA Advisory Committee Meeting, Cornell 2
Advisory Committee Digest 1. 2. At the time of the review, the review committee did not see a detailed description of the different steps that are required for the 4 -step commissioning of the splitter: from a single pass operation, to a 1 pass ERL mode operation (implying an RF phase advance of an odd multiples of p between each passage of the MLC), to a 4 pass re-circulating linac operation mode (implying an RF phase advance of multiples of 2 p between each passage of the MLC), and finally to a 4 pass ERL operation mode (implying an RF phase advance of multiples of 2 p between the first passages of the MLC and a phase advance of p between the 4 th and 5 th passage of the MLC). It is not clear how the path length of the splitter is adjusted by half an RF wave length between the different commissioning steps and if these adjustments are accumulative and to what extent the tuning method established at one step would still be valid at the next step? • The plan of record is to build and commission the configurations for FAT, 1 -Pass ERL and 4 -Pass ERL • Details of the path length adjustment details are shown in the upcoming slides During the review, it was stated that the mechanical arrangement of the path length shifter does in principle not require transverse displacements. Is this also true for the transitions between the four commissioning steps of the splitter? • 3. The path length adjustment works similar for all configurations While designs for the major components exist, some are very new. Designs for splitter combiner support structure as well as arc girders would likely be beneficially refined with a round of critical value engineering. The splitter/combiner regions are especially crowded with magnets and related infrastructure. Drawings that include all components, such as cables and routing, cooling water lines, beam instrumentation, should be completed to demonstrate a practical solution and necessary accessibility for both assembly and maintenance. • The biggest challenge that remains within the congested area of the Splitter is the DFx (design for assembly, adjustment, maintenance, etc). Most of the CAD models/layout include all components to mitigate conflicts and interference. Additional actions need to be taken to ensure the 4 -pass layout is not just feasible but also practical. david. burke@cornell. edu - February 22, 2018 – CBETA Advisory Committee Meeting, Cornell 3
Advisory Committee Digest 4. Splitter and combiner magnets are all electro-magnets. The design of the splitter/combiner magnets should be finalized, that is coils as well as laminations, so that power supplies can be specified and distribution of electrical power and cooling water requirements can be established. • All magnets have been 100% specified with the power and cooling requirement completed. david. burke@cornell. edu - February 22, 2018 – CBETA Advisory Committee Meeting, Cornell 4

Conclusion: Over the last 12 months, the team from Cornell and BNL have worked closely, collaborating on the difficult challenges within the Splitter. Only a few items remain and this team is up for the challenge. The key accomplishments over the year include: 1) Spent several iterations on Bmad lattices to accommodate the necessary physics and space considerations for the congested Splitter. The end result is the published list of parameters for 147 magnets 2) Identifying and down-selecting a magnet supplier to deliver the bulk of the magnets at an extraordinary price (roughly 1/3 of the original budget). 3) Design and build the unique blocks for vacuum and mounting assemblies. These blocks will be used to seamlessly complete the 4 -pass configuration. 4) Procured and received the large optics tables for both Sx and Rx. The Sx tables are installed and surveys into the final position. david. burke@cornell. edu - February 22, 2018 – CBETA Advisory Committee Meeting, Cornell 23
