CAUSES OF DRUG ABUSE By Dr. suhina chatterjee Karim city college
REASONS OF DRUG ABUSE Drug abuse starts as a way to feel good or out of curiosity in childhood or early adolescence. There is not a particular reason behind of any drug abuse. It means there are several factors which influence drug abusing. 1)Biological causes- biological causes of drug addiction include each person's unique physiology and genetics. Some people may enjoy a substance or activity so much that it becomes very tempting and difficult to resist.

Thus, these folks would be at greater risk for developing an addiction because of their genetic vulnerability. 2) Psychological causes- psychological factors propose that people learn to anticipate some benefit from the addiction even though it is harmful. These benefits can range from stress reduction, relief from boredom, pleasurable sensations, coping with negative feelings or situations, or simply the benefit of avoiding withdrawal symptoms.
CONTINUE…. . People with high stress, that lack stress reduction skills, are also more vulnerable to addiction. Psychological research also helps us to understand that motivation is critical. Without sufficient motivation, people cannot easily change unhealthy behaviors. 3) Socio-cultural causes- socio-cultural factors also influence the development of drug addiction. The greatest social influence is the family. Through family culture is transmitted from one generation to the next. Children learn from their family members about drug use, or misuse.
CONTINUE…. 4) Causes of spirituality- Spirituality reflects a belief that life has a meaning and purpose. spiritual people derive meaning and purpose through a personal set of values and goals. The lack of a meaning and purpose in life leads to a disconnection from ourselves and each other. Thus the lack of a spiritual values can also lead to the development of an addiction. 5) Family causes- The weakness in the family performance, problems, conflicts and family struggles are the causes of drug abuse. parental divorce or high genetic susceptibility were the main causes of drug abuse.
CONTINUE…. . 6) Low self esteem- successive failures in life, high life goals, low salary, alone life can easily develop low self esteem in adolescents which further causes of tendency towards drugs. 7) Other causes- Depression, socializing with the wrong people, the desire to smoke and academic failure as the factors of tendency towards drugs. The influence of peers on adolescent drug tendency has been proven.
