Why study Cause and Effect? When reading a selection, understanding the relationship between MAIN EVENTS can help you comprehend the selection better.

So, what is a Cause? A cause is what makes something happen. To find the cause, you need to ask yourself, “What happened first? ”.

What is an Effect? An effect is what happens because of something else (the cause). To find the effect, you need to ask yourself, “What happened second? ”.

Look at the example below The boy was grounded because he wasn’t on green at school. What happened first? The boy wasn’t on green at school. (This is the cause) What happened second? The boy was grounded. (This is the effect)

Finding a cause or effect • If you understand how to use signal words and phrases, finding cause and effect relationships becomes easier. • There are signal words that will help you to identify the two parts of a cause/effect relationship. • The most common signal words are: because, if, when, so, then. There also other words that we can use.

Let’s revisit our example; • What signal word helps us in this sentence? Mark was grounded because he wasn’t on green at school. In the sentence above, the word because signals a cause-effect relationship.

City Population In recent decades, cities have grown so large that now about 50% of the Earth's population lives in urban areas. There are several reasons for this occurrence. First, the increasing industrialization of the nineteenth century resulted in the creation of many factory jobs, which tended to be located in cities. These jobs, with their promise of a better material life, attracted many people from rural areas. Second, there were many schools established to educate the children of the new factory laborers. The promise of a better education persuaded many families to leave farming communities and move to the cities. Finally, as the cities grew, people established places of leisure, entertainment, and culture, such as sports stadiums, theaters, and museums. For many people, these facilities made city life appear more interesting than life on the farm, and therefore drew them away from rural communities.

Here’s how Factory jobs attracted people. Cities have grown very large. Families were attracted to better schools and moved to the city. Making cities grow very large.
