CAUSAL ATTRIBUTION : ANSWERING THE “WHY” QUESTION Atrribution Theory : A description of the way in which people explain the causes of their own and other people’s behavior

Internal Atrribution The inference that a person is behaving in a certain way because of something about the person, such as attitude, character, or personality Simple dichotomy attribution, by Heider : External Atrribution The inference that a person is behaving in a certain way because of something about the situation he or she is in; the assumption is that most people would respond the same way in that situation

The Two-Step Process of Attribution The Behavior You’re sitting in class. The professor asks a question. The student in front of you answers it and is totally wrong ! Step 1 Step 2 You automatically make an internal attribution about the student If you have the time energy & motivation to think some more, you consider other possible explanations like situational ones. The Attribution You adjust your initial attribution from step 1, taking into account possible external causes, and form your final attribution. The Attribution You’re busy, tired, distracted, or just not motivated to think more about this behavior. You stop at this first step, and your attribution remains an internal, dispositional one.

Theory of Correspondent Inference Prinsip : Menggunakan informasi tentang perilaku seseorang (hasil observasi) sebagai dasar untuk menyimpulkan sifat-sifat/trait yang dimiliki orang tsb. 1. Cara mengetahui hubungan antara perilaku dengan karakteristik : Melihat kewajaran perilaku, Perhatikan hanya pada perilaku yang dipilih secara bebas dan mengabaikan perilaku lain yang muncul karena kondisi ttt / terpaksa.

2. Tindakan yang menunjukkan noncommon effects (efek tidak umum) yaitu efek yang hanya dapat disebabkan oleh satu faktor spesifik. 3. Contoh : teman anda akan menikah 4. jika calonnya : tampan, kepribadian menarik, kaya : kita tidak perlu bertanya kenapa dia menikah dengannya, sehingga sulit menebak karakter teman anda. 5. jika calonnya : tampan, membosankan, pemarah, tidak punya pekerjaan. Informasi ini menggambarkan karakter teman anda : menikah hanya karena fisik semata. 3. Tindakan yang memiliki tingkat social desirability rendah. 4. Belajar ttg orang lain melalui tindakannya, yang tidak biasa dilakukan oleh kebanyakan orang.

Model of Scientific Reasoner (Kelley) Prinsip : kesimpulan ttg atribusi seseorang didasarkan pada 3 sumber informasi Distinctiveness Information about the extent to which one particular actor behaves in the same way to different stimuli Consensus Information Consistency Information about the extent to which other people behave the same way toward the same stimulus as the actor does. Information about the extent to the behavior between one actor and one stimulus is the same across time and circumstances

Atribusi Keberhasilan & Kegagalan (Weiner) Teori ini menjawab 2 pertanyaan : 1. Apakah faktor yang mempengaruhi perilaku tsb menetap atau berubah-ubah ? Penyebab internal (kepribadian, temperamen) : relatif stabil, tapi motif, kesehatan, kelelahan : berubah-ubah. 2. Apakah faktor-faktor tsb dapat dikendalikan/diubah ? Faktor internal ternyata juga dapat dikendalikan, jika mau Weiner menerangkan proses atribusi kegagalan & keberhasilan dari 2 dimensi : 1) Penyebab (locus of control) : internal – eksternal ; 2) Stabilitas penyebab : stabil – tidak stabil

BIAS dalam ATRIBUSI 1. Bias Korespondensi : Kesalahan Atribusi Fundamental 2. Kecenderungan untuk mengatribusi perilaku orang lain pada faktor-faktor internal (disposisional), meskipun faktor-faktor eksternalnya jelas-jelas ada dan mungkin berpengaruh. Miskin karena salahnya sendiri : malas, pecandu obat 3. Bukan karena : tidak ada pekerjaan.

2. Efek Aktor-Pengamat (Actor-Observer Difference) “Saya berbuat begini karena pengaruh situasional; Anda berbuat begitu karena anda memang orang yang seperti itu” Contoh : surat kpd. Ann Landers. Dear Ann Landers, I’m writing you in desperation, hoping you can help me with a problem I’m having with my mother. A little over year ago, I moved with my boyfriend despite my mother’s protests. She has never liked “Kevin”. I’ll admit he’s far from perfect and we’ve had our problems. He’s an alcoholic, has a bad temper, is mentally abusive, is a compulsive liar and cannot hold a job. I am in debt over my head because of him but my biggest problem is that mother is obsessed with my situation. I understand her concern, but I can take only so much. . Someone in somewhere

Response : Dear. Someone : Your mother didn’t write to me. You did. So you’re the one who is going to get the advice. Get into counseling at once and find out why you insist on hanging on to an alcoholic, abusive, unemployed, liar, . . . The letter and its response depict actor/observer differences in attribution. The letter writers tended to attribute their problems to external factors (e. g. , this letter writer says her biggest problem is her mother), whereas the advice columnist tended to make dispositional attributions to the letter writers (e. g. , “Get into counseling at once”)

3. Bias Mengutamakan Diri Sendiri (Self Serving Bias) “Saya memang bagus; Kamu hanya beruntung”. Explanations for one’s successes that credit internal, dispositional factors and explanations for one’s failures that blame external, situational factors. Lebih kuat terjadi di Barat (yang berorientasi individual) daripada di Asia (kolektivis) An interesting arena for studying self-serving attributions is sports. We can conjecture about what kinds of attributions were made by members of the 1999 World’s Cup soccer teams after the other team won the tournament.

4. Menyalahkan Diri Sendiri Terlalu menyalahkan diri sendiri saat menemui kegagalan, sehingga kurang tepat membuat atribusi. 5. Hedonic Relevance Kurang objektif memberi penilaian terhadap peristiwa yang menyangkut diri sendiri. Peristiwa menguntungkan dianggap positif, tidak menguntungkan dianggap negatif. 5. Bias Egosentris Menilai sesuatu dengan menggunakan diri sendiri. Beranggapan orang umumnya akan berbuat seperti dirinya. Standar diri akan menyulitkan dalam mengatribusi sesuatu.

6. Defensive Attributions Explanations for behavior that avoid feelings of vulnerability and mortality. a. Unrealistic Optimism People think that good things are more likely to happen to them than to other people, and bad things are less likely to happen to them than to others. b. Belief in a Just World We believe that bad things happen to bad people and good things happen to good people. Whites in South Africa subscribe to this belief, believing that the poor and the rich each have what they deserve.
