Catholic Committee on Scouting Authority • The Orange County Catholic Committee on Scouting (CCS) derives its authority from the local ordinary (Bishop, Archbishop, Cardinal) and the Diocese of Orange. • It is a Diocesan committee, not a local BSA council committee.

Catholic Committee on Scouting Mission • The Orange County Catholic Committee on Scouting (CCS) exists to utilize and ensure the constructive use of the program of the BSA as a viable form of youth ministry with Catholic Youth in the diocese using the NCCS programs and local resources.

Catholic Committee on Scouting National Catholic Committee on Scouting (NCCS) • “The NCCS is a church committee of concerned Catholic laity and clergy which is advisory to the Boy Scouts of America and relates to the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) through its NCCS Episcopal Liaison”. -Bylaws of the NCCS

Catholic Committee on Scouting Committee Purpose • Give guidance, vitality and leadership in the spiritual phase of Scouting to all Catholic Scouts and Scouters of the diocese. • Endeavors to make the entire Scouting program available to increasing numbers of youths in parish units and in units operated by Catholic organizations.

Catholic Committee on Scouting Committee Purpose (con’t) • The agenda of the CCS supplements the program of the BSA, with special instructions and activities, in the spiritual phase of Scouting as it relates to Catholics.

Catholic Religious Emblems Cub Scout Programs • Work with parents to complete Activity Book • Pastoral review and signature of book to complete program Boy Scout/Venturing Programs • Meet in groups of 8 - 10 youth with a facilitator or moderator to complete Activity Book • AAD is male only, PPXII male and female • Board of Review needed to complete program

Catholic Religious Emblems All Programs Completion • Application sent to Diocesan Catholic Committee by Oct. 15, 2014 • Include check for $30 made out to “CCS” • Knot and emblem ordered by CCS Religious Emblems Chair Presentation of knot and emblem • Pack or Troop meeting • Scout Sunday • Catholic Religious Awards Ceremony

Catholic Religious Emblems Youth religious knot is worn centered above the left pocket on the Scout uniform with the applicable device. Venturing NOTE: Youth religious knot can also be worn on adult uniform similar to Arrow of Light and Eagle Scout knots (If the adult earned it as a youth).

Light of Christ PURPOSE • To help Cub develop a personal relationship with Jesus • With the parents’ active assistance and participation, the Cub will come to see Jesus as a real person and friend

Light of Christ OBJECTIVES • To support the role of parents as the primary catechists of their children - English and Spanish language • To foster early family religious involvement • To provide a stepping stone to the other Religious Emblems

Light of Christ ELIGIBILITY • Registered 6 and 7 year old Cub Scout of the Catholic faith. (Tiger/Wolf) • Must complete BEFORE start the 3 rd grade. REQUIREMENTS • Activity Book • Parent or guardian to work with Scout • Keep Unit Religious Emblems Coordinator informed of progress • Pastor reviews book with Cub and signs application form

Parvuli Dei (“Children of God”) PURPOSE • Family and Parish Oriented Program • Activities help boys discover the presence of God in their daily lives • Develop positive self-image through group or community contributions

Parvuli Dei (“Children of God”) OBJECTIVES • Develop awareness of: • God’s Love • his identity as an important member of family, community and Body of Christ • the responsibilities of God’s Love • the responsibilities of service to others which grows out of God’s love for us • To help your child to grow in love and forgiveness

Parvuli Dei (“Children of God”) PROGRAM EMPHASIS • Personal relationship with Jesus • Service to others • Communal prayer • Understanding Reconciliation • Emphasis on giving and sharing

Parvuli Dei (“Children of God”) ELIGIBILITY • Registered 8 to 10 year old (Bear or Webelos) of Catholic faith • Must not have started the 6 th grade (can not finish after crossover) REQUIREMENTS • Activity Book • Parent or guardian to work with Scout • Make a banner • Keep unit coordinator updated on progress • Pastor reviews and signs application form

Ad Altare Dei (“To the Altar of God”) PURPOSE • Faith growth through the Sacraments and to help the young man grow spiritually closer to God and the Church OBJECTIVES • Better understanding of the Sacraments • Sacraments are Living • Companion with Christ

Ad Altare Dei (“To the Altar of God”) PROGRAM EMPHASIS • Relate Gospel to life • Explore social issues • Opportunity for plan/problem solve • Explore and discover themselves ELIGIBILITY • Designed for 13 and 14 year olds • Registered Boy Scout or Venturer, girls now included • Completed 6 th grade and active in troop for 6 months

Ad Altare Dei (“To the Altar of God”) REQUIREMENTS • Trained counselor • Activity book and Catholic Bible • Complete application in AAD book and get needed signatures to start • Regular participation in Sunday worship • Several service projects

Pope Pius XII PURPOSE • Catholic Scouting's church-related ministries and vocation program • Help youth more fully develop a Christian way of life within a faith community • To help young people discover their vocation and discuss current issues facing the church and society

Pope Pius XII OBJECTIVES • Explore baptismal call to bring out an awareness of current and future calls from God in; inner self, secular community, church community • Explore potential church-related vocations, occupations and ministries • Explore a controversial issue in society/church and it’s impact on selected vocation, occupation & ministry

Pope Pius XII PROGRAM EMPHASIS • Call from God • Call from community • Call from church ELIGIBILITY • Registered Catholic Boy Scouts and/or Venture Crew Members (Male & Female) • All registered Venturers over 15 years and before age 21 • All Boy Scouts in high school and before age 18.

Pope Pius XII REQUIREMENTS • Facilitator/Moderator, meetings run by candidates themselves • Activity book • Complete application in PPXII book and get needed signatures to start • Ideal group 4 - 12 youth • Interviews and an investigation of a controversial issue facing society

Religious Emblems Counselors Scouter Development: Lay Apostolate Formation for Scouting Program • An adult retreat put on by CCS • Prepares Scouters to use Scouting as a form of youth ministry • A series of guided reflections using Scripture to ascertain how God is calling each to respond • Four component parts: • Call to leadership • Call to holiness • Call to conversion • Call to worship

Religious Emblems Counselors Scouting in the Catholic Church • Training conference at Philmont Training Center, Cimarron, New Mexico • Brings religious and laity together with varying experience in Scouting and the Catholic faith. • Helps participants understand how Scouting is a Youth Ministry • Trains leaders to present Scouter Development retreat at their diocese • Can earn the Jerusalem Cross Award for bringing what they learned back to the diocese

Duty to God Recognition Patch • No specific requirements to earn. • Used to recognize those for their contribution and support to Catholic Scouting • Patch can be worn on uniform • Certificate is available for recognition of non-Scouters

Rosary Patch Series: Pray the Rosary This activity encourages the praying of the Rosary. The series focuses on the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary and how to pray the Rosary.

Rosary Patch Series Purpose • Learn the Mysteries • Pray the Rosary Recipients • All Scouts and Scouters. • This activity can be worked on individually or as a group. Requirements Vary by age and are available on line at NCCS and submitted to NCCS. Joyful Sorrowful Luminous Glorious

Footsteps of American Saints Purpose: • The goal is to share the lives of several Saints • . Most lived and worked in North America • . Some others never set foot in America, however they had a huge impact on the Catholic American landscape. • All 13 of them sought to follow Jesus.

International Awareness Recognition Source • International Catholic Conference of Scouting • The Pope appoints priests to work with the ICCS as chaplains or ecclesiastical associates. • An activity of the NCCS International Committee

International Awareness Recognition Purpose • Contributes to the education of Scouts from the point of view of the Catholic faith • Develops and enhances the spiritual dimension of Scouting in the World Scouting Movement. Recipients • All Scouts and Scouters. • Requirements vary by age and are available on Requirements line at NCCS and are submitted to NCCS.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Award • Named for the patron saint of the Diocese. • Must have earned the Parvuli Dei, Ad Altare Dei, Pope Pius XII and be an Eagle Scout prior to his 18 th birthday. • Outstanding example in his scouting, school activities and service to others. • Assisted other youth in earning their religious emblems • Is an active member in troop or crew & CCS • Only one recipient per year

National Catholic Quality Unit Award – Pope Paul VI ELIGIBILITY • Catholic Chartered Units PURPOSE • To promote Catholic membership • Recognize the Charter Organization • Motivate and improve the effectiveness of individual units and adult leadership • Provide each youth with a top-quality program which encompasses the religious, vocational, and educational aspects of Scouting under Catholic auspices

Adult Recognition Victor Rodgers Young Adult Award • Rodgers was a CCS member for many years. • Was an example of for helping boys with their faith • Recognizes adult scouters between 18 - 24+ for continued “Duty to God” • Girls are also eligible if she is a recipient of the PPXII

Supplemental Information • Religious emblems coordinators, counselors and moderators should be trained through local Catholic Committee on Scouting • Contact Jan Hill, Religious Emblems Chair, for the trained adults in your area • Emblem workbooks from Scout Shops or online at www. scoutstuff. org. Emblems are purchased through the local Catholic Committee on Scouting. • Lost or damaged awards can be replaced by contacting the Religious Emblems chairman or the Diocesan chaplain.
