Category Social Political Economic Cultural Geographical How did it affect society, different the national classes, and policy government, policies and past precedent? How did it affect How did it the nation money- contribute to the wise American Identity? How did it affect geographic boundaries or jeopardize expansion The Corrupt Bargain Many people felt as if their votes did not matter as Jackson won the popular vote, but not the Presidency. Exposes a flaw in the Electoral College that proves it does not always reflect the votes of the people. The presidency now went to the National Republicans, who were supporters of the National Bank of the United States (The BUS) Shows that politics, particularly with elected positions, can become corrupt. Politicians can sometimes do questionable things to ensure their position. Contributes to the smalls wars happening in the House of Representatives. The issue of states rights, and the issue of new state politics. The Spoils System Made it appear to many people that to be involved in the government you had to be a “friend” of Jackson’s. Newly elected officials had given government jobs to friends and supporters for years. It was called patronage. Jackson makes it OFFICIAL even though it’s not right. Jackson stood behind his theory of the “common man” and working toward equality, yet was giving away jobs to his “friends” He was taking away money from the common man. Inspires nepotism in other job fields. People moving west will be further away from the government, and in turn have less of a say. People get weary to move west.

The Tariff of 1828 People both in the New England Coast and the South

The Tariff of 1828 People both in the New England Coast and the South start to suffer. NEshippers and portsman who rely on imports for business were losing money as less people wanted to import and pay the hefty tariff! The South has to rely on the free labor system of slavery more than ever because the price of farm equipment is increasing under the tariff. The Tariff of 1828 was nicknamed the Tariff of Abominations! Inspired a pride in the making and purchasing of American goods. “Buy American” New England the South will be upset, and the people moving west will be happy. Jackson hopes it will encourage people to move west. “Go West, Young Man” The South- British goods - better made Now they would have to pay a hefty tariff. National Bank War Claims the BUS only helps wealthy easterners. Holds is responsible for the PANIC of 1819. Many people agree because they are looking for someone to blame. Jackson criticized the fact that the BUS was composed of nonelected positions and that they controlled so much of the nation’s money. Yet, he had appointed many positions under the Spoils System Jackson reorganized money to Pet Banks after killing the BUS. They circulated money recklessly and it helped lead to another PANIC in the 1830 s Jackson creates a “fear” over the Bank of the United States People are afraid of the BUS. Some people are still afraid to put money in the bank today. In the 1830 s paper notes would no longer be accepted to buy lands west. You had to pay in gold and silver. Indian Removal Adds to the growing divide between Native Americans and the government. Jacksonian Democracy/ Shows again that Jackson is supporting slavery by ensuring that southern plantation owners will get the Native American land. Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole people held about 100 million acres of fertile farming land that the south could use to make $$$. Many Native American tribes today/ reservation lands will not recognize the $20 bill. Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole people are driven off their land by US troops.
