Cataloguing of Graphic Material Art Original
Definition of Art Original “An original two or three dimensional work of art created by the artist. (e. g. Painting, drawing, sculpture etc. )” (AACR-2) Art prints, two dimensional art reproductions, photographs, etc are designated as “Pictures”. While three dimensional art reproductions are designated as “Models” These are called art original because these are the works which are concerned with a particular area or person and based on facts and figures.
Sources of Information The item itself Accompanying material Frame or Mount : The frame or mount around the art original, as a frame of picture, or painting etc. Other sources
Entry Rules Main Entry: Original works of art drawings, photographs, etc are entered under the name of the artist. Reproductions are also entered under the artist responsible for the original. If more than three person are involved in the making of an item, it is entered under title, thus a hanging entry is prepared.
Title Exact title is recorded If no title is given, the cataloguer must supply a brief title in square brackets (which must be mentioned in the note area as “title supplied by the cataloguer”. )
Statement of Responsibility In the Statement of Responsibility area, name of the person responsible for the creation of the item is recorded.
Publication Distribution Area Place of Publication, the name of the publisher, and the year of publication is recorded. If it is an unpublished item, there is no need to enter the name of the publisher and the place of publication. Place of publication be given only if it is a published item.
Physical Description Area It includes the extent of items, (SMD), color, the material used, dimension in centimeters, and accompanying material. Example: 2 photographs: Rubber; col. ; 25 x 30 cm
Note Area There may be additional title information, history of item, Physical details not fitted in to the physical description area, intended audience etc.
