Sustainable development of Caspian coastal communities The EU small grants programme aims to assist selected Caspian coastal communities that are experiencing a combination of economic difficulties and environmental pressures, by financing a number of community-based projects for development of alternative, more environmentally sustainable sources of livelihood. The EU funded Technical assistance project aimed at supporting training on the coastal communities’ sustainable development and coordinating regional activities in the CEP framework. The IMC company (UK) implement this component.

Small Grant programme Implemented by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) in cooperation with the Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (REC Caucasus) and Russian Regional Environmental Centre (Rec Russia)

Thematic areas for granted projects: • Creation of new enterprises or additional job vacancies that will allow to get the alternative legal sources of incomes in the Communities with a high level of unemployment and where illegal fishery is a main source for life support at present time; • Clean –up of the polluted coastal areas as one of the community effort to develop a more sustainable economic base; • Pilot projects on environmental restoration in communities where desertification and deforestation constrain economic development; • Training in additional professional skills that promote sustainable development; • Establishing revolving funds to support community’s sustainable development.

2 -d autumn grant competition: September – November 2004 Received: Fist Results: 301 applications Allocated sum will be more than 700, 000 EUR Evaluation process will be completed in December 2004
