CASM MUST: l SMAG: must bring it home (demonstrate gender equity in members of SMAG). Advocate (sincerely and intensively) l Secretariat: composition (who is doing what). should be more gender balanced l CASM: Should have a gender desk
CASM MUST: l Sensitization and gender training of men: leaders in CASM (including SMAG), miners, policy makers (leaders), and other key persons. l Gender Toolkit (no more gender whitewash in any ASM projects). Pre-, during, post-project. ENTIRE PROCESS. : l LSM-SSM: evaluate, respond to gender impacts in labour sending areas. Advocate to companies and communities – a response to this is seriously needed.
CASM MUST: l l l CASM Conferences: no more marginalization of gender issue. Must have a full plenary session on gender, including training and use of participatory methods with everyone. CASM Conference: More use of participatory methods (give everyone a voice). Minimize powerpoint use. Increase the visibility of women miners – every conference presentation should consider gender issues.
CASM MUST: l l l Increase visibility of women: develop role models (in CASM, govt leaders, miners, trade unions, etc etc), consider prizes to women miners, etc. Advocate for outreach to most vulnerable women: through work with on-the-ground NGOs Advocate for use of RIGHTS-BASED Approaches to sensitization of women and men LSM-SSM: Study lessons from LSM companies re: HIV AIDS. Study links between reproductive health and mine work occupational health and mine
