Case Study: Killing Chloroplast
Warm Up Pass your Lecture 3: The Calvin Cycle (The Light Independent Cycle) Cornell notes to the front. 1. 2. 3. What is a chloroplast? What are the components of a chloroplast? What is the role of chloroplast in photosynthesis?
Answer: 1. 2. 3. A chloroplast is a specialized organelle inside of plant cells designed to absorb light. The plant cells use light, water and carbon dioxide gas to produce food for themselves. Chloroplast contain thylakoids which are arranged in stacks known as grana. Proteins within the thylakoid membrane organize chlorophyll and the other pigments into clusters called photosystems. The stroma is a region on the outside of the thylakoid membrane in a chloroplast. The chloroplast contains the components necessary for photosynthesis to occur including the thylakoids and the stroma.
Quick Check on Experiment: You will have 5 minutes to write down observations in your data table and water your plants. GO!
What’s missing from this cornfield?
Internship Interview Instructions: Your parents have asked you to pursue a summer internship opportunity with a company called Trans. Bio. During the interview, Trans. Bio has requested you show off your knowledge of photosynthesis. Therefore, you will need to prepare by reviewing Photosynthesis. Good Luck!
Reviewing for Internship Opportunity Instructions: Take out a piece of binder paper & title it “Research Questions For Case Study Killing Chloroplast”. Next, answer the below questions by watching the following video listed under lab: 1. How do farmers prevent weeds from growing in their fields? 2. What happens to the clover when you treat clover with Atrazine? 3. What does photosystem II do? 4. What happens in photosystem I? 5. What does ATP synthase do? 6. What fuels the Calvin Cycle? 7. What is G 3 P? 8. What is the effect of Atrazine on the process of photosynthesis?
Internship Interview Instructions: Your parents have asked you to pursue a summer internship opportunity with a company called Trans. Bio. During the interview, Trans. Bio has requested you illustrate your knowledge of the process of photosynthesis by completing the form on page 3. It’s time to put your knowledge to the test! You may use your research questions and any other resource available to you at this time. Good Luck!
Congrats on becoming a Green Intern! PHEW! Now that the interview is over it is time to get started working on your assigned case study with your partner. Your goal is to determine the effects of herbicide on photosynthesis. Today you and your partner will aim to complete: Part II graph the data presented in the tables. Part III using data set 1 -4. IF YOU DO NOT FINISH IT IS HOMEWORK. NOTE: YOU WILL NEED TO EACH COMPLETE YOUR OWN INDIVIDUAL WORKSHEET!
Kahoot
Case Study: Killing Chloroplast
Warm Up 1. 2. 3. What is atrazine and why is it so effective at killing plants? Looking at your graph from Part II of the Case Study Killing Chloroplast explain what trends you are viewing. What herbicide do you think is the most effective and why?
Your Task Instructions: You are nearing the completion of your internship with Transbio, therefore you are required to present your research findings to your peers. You will need to go to my website under lab and select the Transbio Research Presentation Requirements. You will find out what is expected in terms of formatting, content and how you will be assessed on your research findings.

Adapting Your Research You will need to make a suggestion to Transbio about what they need to do to adjust their future research. It will be up to you to advice Transbio about what pesticide should or should not be used. And explain what pathway pesticides like atrazine disrupt and how that impacts the environment.
