INTRODUCTION Organic farming is seen as a social movement that is initiated by persons and organizations, which are not part of the mainstream agriculture segment. AUSTRIA 10% of al farmers are organic (numbers differ) 11 organic producer organization The oldest organizations are ORBI (Förderungsgemeinschaft für ein gesundes Bauerntum), established in 1962, not by famers but by people with an interest in organic farming Bio Austria ( founded 1979, 55% of the organic producers)
AUSTRIA ÖIG (Österreichische Interessengemeinschaft für biologische Landwirtschaft) 3 associations: Erde & Saat (founded in 1987) together with its daughter company “Grüner Zweig”, Dinatur (founded in 1990 after a split from Demeter), KOPRA (consumer producer association, founded in 1991 as a regional association in the Vorarlberg province). ÖIG was founded in 1994 as an alternative for producer organizations that were more interested in alternative marketing structures to the supermarkets

GREECE 2 national organizations: SOYE ( Ecological Farming Association of Greece) EEBE ( Union of Organic Farmers of Greece) SOYE: established in 1985, association of scientists, producers and consumers EEBE: established in 1993, represents producer interests Certification and Support of local Structures
