Sleep Deprivation New York DJ, Peter Tripp, set a world record for sleep deprivation in 1959. He went for 201 hours (8. 4 days) without sleep.
Symptoms • Eventually, he became psychotic. He searched drawers looking for nonexistent money. • He became paranoid. • He finally claimed he was not Peter Tripp but an imposter.
After effects When he finally fell asleep, he slept for 24 hours. The sleep may have made him feel physically normal, but before long his family noticed a change in his personality. He became moody & depressed.
It had long lasting consequences v Tripp began to argue with his boss. He became involved in a scandal, and was fired from his job as a famous DJ. v He ultimately divorced 4 times. v Many people believe that the sleep stunt changed Peter Tripp forever.
Micro sleeps v By the end his BODY TEMPERATURE and BRAIN WAVE ACTIVITY showed almost no difference to that of a SLEEPING STATE. v This suggests he was taking micro sleeps. EEG’s show micro sleep is the same as sleep. Watch ‘Microsleeps whilst driving’ v http: //youtu. be/ha. TAp. Xretfg
Randy Gardner v Student stayed awake for 260 hours (11 days) v He SHOWED NO PSYCHOTIC SYMPTOMS (like Tripp did) and after a lengthy sleep appeared totally normal. v After 72 hours of sleep deprivation it appears individuals show periods of MICROSLEEP while they are awake.
