CARTIER BRESSON GEOMETRY The Art and Science of Composition
“To take a photograph is to align the head, the eye and the heart. It’s a way of life. To take a photograph is to hold one’s breath when all faculties converge in the face of fleeting reality. ” -Henri Cartier-Bresson
Henri Cartier-Bresson, considered the 'Master of the moment', started out by studying art and painting before turning his concentration to photography. His photographs contained a zen like simplicity with a precise composition that captured a unique moment in time. He never cropped or altered his images but strived for perfect composition at the click of his camera. Inspired by his artistic studies, Cartier. Bresson brought precise composition using visual aesthetics and geometry into photography. The same precise composition ideals that can be found in many of the paintings by the great Renaissance artists. By combining his knowledge of geometrical composition and the element of chance his photographs exhibit the 'geometry of the moment'.
Phi – The Golden Mean Like pi, phi is a number with no arithmetical solution. In it’s decimal form it just keep on going into infinity without ever repeating. The unique thing about this number is that it can be found incorporated in all known organic structures, from the bone structure of human beings to the seed pattern of a sunflower to the spiral of a sea shell. Maybe it is because phi is this ‘geometrical blueprint’ that it appeals to our artistic sense. Phi can be graphed out as a spiral known as the Golden Mean Spiral and can be found in art and Cartier-Bresson’s Photographs

Line Curves and lines in a composition leads the eye, awakens the imagination, gives structure, and defines the photograph. Line adds artistic significance to an historic image.
“Photography is simultaneously and instantaneously the recognition of a fact and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that express and signify that fact” -Henry Cartier-Bresson
