What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? • Affects 3 -6% of adults in general population • Carpal tunnel is the narrow passageway of ligament and bones at the base of the hand • Swelling of the area puts pressure on the median nerve • Median nerve supplies lateral portion of hand – palm, thumb, index finger, middle finger, and portion of ring finger
Common Symptoms • May report “swollen” or “useless” hands • Loss of strength, weaker grip • Hand shaking or “flicking” in an effort to lessen pain
Typical Causes • Caused by excess pressure on median nerve – Over-Use: Typing, Writing, Sewing, Painting, Driving, Sports, Playing Instruments, Working with Tools, etc – Pregnancy – Arthritis – Diabetes – Trauma – Static position of the wrist
Motoric/Sensory Limitations • Limited ability to grasp and carry objects • Limited mobility in rotation of the wrist
Treatment Options • Medication – anti-inflammatory drugs, B Vitamins, corticosteroids • Corticosteroid injections • Splinting • Surgery – transverse carpal ligament division
