Carnivorous Ninja Warriors Launch Readiness Review Katie Brissenden, Hannah Williams, Aram Podolski, Kat Bryant, Arley Hendrick, Cam Comeau November 5, 2009
Mission Overview • Analyze the world at high altitude because, due to climate changes on the Earth, humans may need to live in different environmental conditions. • The viability of life sustaining environments in different atmospheric conditions • Six ultra-violet photodiodes, one on each face of the satellite. • Methane gas sensor and the carbon monoxide sensor will be embedded onto the top of the satellite. • Dangerous levels of methane and carbon monoxide, and ultraviolet rays will be determined prior to the launching of the satellite. Following the recovery of the satellite, the data will be analyzed to determine if the dangerous levels for each sensor was reached.
Design Overview – Should be shown with picture(s) of actual hardware – – – 15 x 15 cm cube ¾ inch insulation on all internal sides 6 UV photodiodes on each face 1 Methane gas sensor on top 1 Carbon monoxide sensor on top Parts – Foam Core, AVR microcontroller, digital camera, resistor heater, HOBO, insulation, CO sensor/module, CH 4 sensor/module, 8 UV photodiodes, tubing, wires, aluminum tape, 9 V batteries, aluminum tubing, circuit board, – UV photodiodes in aluminum tubes – Gas sensors embedded in foam core – Camera positioned horizontally to look out of one face, Plexiglas covering opening to seal, anti-fog on Plexiglas – All hardware secured inside of cube with Velcro, hot glue
Test Results • Structural Tests – Drop: dropped from 30 ft, minimal exterior damage, few dents, structure sturdy – Kick: minimal exterior damage, few dents, structure sturdy – Whip: Flight tube sustained test, no structural damage – All structure tests contained rocks to imitate mass of hardware inside Balloon. Sat – Some rocks came loose, require more tape, Velcro, and hot glue to secure hardware for launch
Test Results • Hardware/ Sensor Test • Cold Test: – Lasted for over 90 minutes – All hardware intact and working – Shut off due to battery drain – After reset, turned on without problems – Data inconclusive, but still recovered – Insulation and heater provided adequate internal temperature for hardware to function
Test Results • Gas Sensors – Receive power from board – LED responded to adjusting the trip level – Heaters functioning – Data recovered, but does not make sense due to programming errors and parser problems.
Test Results • UV Photodiodes – Input voltages to board – Emitting light from same type of photodiodes, data recovered and calibrated using known wavelength of photodiodes.

Predictions on Actual Flight Results • As altitude increases: – Expect increase in UV radiation – Decrease in temperature – Decrease in pressure – Heater will provide adequate internal temperature in satellite – Camera will take pictures every 20 seconds – Structure will withstand all external
Biggest Worries/Concerns • Programming for gas sensors is incomprehensible and affecting other sensors data- may not be able to run program for gas sensors in order to get adequate data. • Fixing programming for other sensors • Data is not making sense
