In Croatia, carnival is celebrated all over the country. At the beginning of the carnival, people in costumes take over the town. The mayor gives the keys a town to the carnival master (representative of the people in costumes).
During the carnival, people can dress up and be anything they want. They wear costumes, masks, hats, wigs and make up. Everybody has fun. People are happy. They can dance, make jokes and be silly. A MASK A WIG A COSTUME

People in Rijeka say that the period of carnival is the fifth season of the year.
There are many parades. People put on different masks and go around the town. People come from other countries too and join the international parade. Who has got the best mask? Who is the queen of the carnival?

In Croatia, we like to eat doughnuts for carnival. They are usually filled with jam or chocolate. Yummy!

BELL RINGERS A BELL
There is a famous character of the carnival in Croatia. It has got different names, depending on a region. It is usually called Pust, Fašnik, Krnjo or even Prince of the Carnival. This strange prince is actually a big puppet.
At the end of the carnival, there is a trial. Pust is accused of everything bad that happened that year. The poor puppet is always guilty! He is responsible for everything and has to be burnt. A PUPPET
