San Paolo Sant'Emidio

Biography: Carlo Crivelli, Italian Renaissancepainter, was born in Venice, in 1435. Despite the lack of documentation, it is believed that he studied under Jacobello del Fiore Crivelli when he was still a boy. He also studied at the school of Vivarini in Venice and then went to Padua, where he worked with Francesco Squarcione. His first dated work is an altarpiecein the Church of San Silvestro at Massa, near Fermo. He worked mainly in Ancona and Ascoli. There are only two works in Venice, in the Church of San Sebastiano. Crivelli painted with tempera, despite the interest with the oil painting, at that time. Unlike the naturalistic trend of Florence, the style of Crivelli resembled the Byzantine sensibility. He used fruit and flowers as accessories to his works, which was characteristicof the workshop of Francesco. Squarcione, in Padua. His work is almost exclusively religious, as it was primarily ordered by religiousorders. In 1459, Crivelli left Italy and lived for some time in Dalmatia. On his return, he remainedin the province of Marche, where he lived from 1468 until his death in 1495. São Tomás de Aquino
