What is national identity • National identity is a person's sense of belonging to one nation. • It is the feeling that your nation is one whole group, bound together by distinctive traditions, culture, and language.

Caribbean Identity • Your Caribbean identity is a your sense of belonging to the Caribbean Region. • It is the feeling that all Caribbean people are one whole group, bound together by distinctive traditions, history, culture, and language.
Shared characteristics which distinguish Caribbean people as one group include: • Similar History • Similar ethnic groups (similar ancestry) • Similar music and dance • Similar economies • Similar religions • Similar dialects of each European language • See page 41 of textbook for description of each
Importance of strong Trinidadian identity • Promote unity among people. • Friendship • To encourage working and building together rather than competition against each other. • To appreciate that cultural diversity is our blessing not our curse, so that we could use diversity to our advantage.
Importance of strong Caribbean identity • Pooling Human Resources within Caricom for economic development. • Pooling resources to help each other during natural disasters • As a unified group we can better defend ourselves against bullies from outside the Caribbean. • To preserve and conserve our distinct way of life.
