Summary of local context Solent area: • Population of more than 1. 3 million • Over 50, 000 businesses • An internationally-recognised key economic hub anchored ports & airport. Optimism that local growth of the economy in: • advanced engineering • marine & maritime • aerospace sectors within the SME community. These figures were collated pre-COVID

Future of work? Will robots make some jobs redundant? By 2030 robots or smart machines are forecast to have an IQ higher than 99% of humans Non-human transport systems e. g. driverless cars = 10% of all cars on UK roads by mid 2030 s Artificial Intelligence capability rapidly improving – some people say that two thirds of UK jobs have potential to be automated

Future of work? Platform companies – Google, Facebook, Uber, Just Eat, Air. Bn. B are changing how people work – not 9 am-5 pm but working evenings and weekends. More people are becoming self-employed as part of this ‘Gig economy’ More people are interested in how food and products are made and where they come from e. g ‘Buy Local’ and the increased number of people choosing vegan food. We need to reshape how we produce and consume in the decades ahead – this will have consequences for work.
