Career Opportunities is a one-stop career center and an activity of the Cape & Islands Workforce Investment Board. • Services offered are a collaboration of three agency's: Job Training & Employment Corporation (JTEC), Division of Career Services (DCS) and Division of Unemployment Assistance (DUA). • Funding is provided by Department of Labor, Department of Education, Department of Transitional Assistance and Barnstable County. • Youth Services are Free • A free membership is required to take advantage of the resources available

Youth Services at Career Opportunities • Town of Barnstable Youth Works Program • Three in-school programs on the Cape where each student is assigned a case manager to assist them in earning their high school diploma • JTEC Works Program

Town of Barnstable Youth Works Program • Open to youths 14 -21 years of

Town of Barnstable Youth Works Program • Open to youths 14 -21 years of age who reside in the town of Barnstable • Session I Pre-employment training - Monday, July 9 through Friday, July 13, 2012. Participating youth will be paid $8. 00 per hour for a total of 12. 5 hours of training. • Session II Work experience – Monday, July 16, 2012 through Thursday, August 23 rd. Participating youth will be paid $9. 00 per hour for work up to 25 hours a week. Work will take place in Town of Barnstable’s Departments and in non-profit organizations operating in the town of Barnstable. Who can apply for this program? Eligible youth ages 14 to 21 who reside in the town of Barnstable. Youth must have already reached their 14 th birthday by the time they apply.

More information… • Youth and families do not need to meet minimum income requirements, anyone is welcome. • All job sites are in the non-profit sector. • Includes municipalities, airport, Barnstable housing, Maintenance, Sturgis Charter School. • Almost like paid summer internship, youth gains relevant experience in the work force. • Learns skills that will help them in future careers, and helps with the career decision making process when they get out of school. • Limitations are based on location, only youth of the Town of Barnstable are eligible.

In-school youth programs • Career Opportunities partners with three schools: Barnstable High School Upper

In-school youth programs • Career Opportunities partners with three schools: Barnstable High School Upper Cape Regional Technical High School, and Cape Cod Regional Technical High School • Clientele mostly includes students with learning disabilities, IEP’s or behavioral problems. (At risk youth) • Meets monthly at Career Opportunities in Hyannis. • Focus on problem solving, group activities, and making sure students graduate.

JTEC Works Program • Out of School Youth aged 16 -21, who do not

JTEC Works Program • Out of School Youth aged 16 -21, who do not have a GED • Lacking in successful work experience in the private or public sector. • Clientele must be selected and interviewed for the program • Works around 12 hours per week for work experience, and completes 8 hours per work of academics (training, etc. )

JTEC continued… • Once clients become age 18, they may qualify for a special

JTEC continued… • Once clients become age 18, they may qualify for a special training grant. • Placed in non-profit and municipalities for job sites. • Many clients are able to find stay on as full time employees after completing work at their job site. • Limitations include: must meet income guidelines similar to qualifying for unemployment and other state funded programs. Also, must have transportation to be able to get to the job sites.
