Building Job Search Resiliency Resilience = People + Process Those who are resilient prepare to be resilient To be resilient we have to. . . Learn from previous experiences, both good and bad Build strong positive professional relationships Be proactive and use resources to thrive Develop our growth mindset Slide adapted from Dr. Sharon Milgram’s Resiliency workshop, NIH T 3, 2018.
Shifting your mindset Fixed mindset We believe that our intelligences and talents are essentially fixed We don’t believe effort will pay off and avoid taking risks to avoid making mistakes and feeling bad Growth mindset We believe that our intelligences and talents can be developed through effort, the use of resources, persistence, and good teaching. We work to grow in areas that are important to us and that forward our education/career. We understand that mistakes are part of this growth process and see them as a learning opportunity. Slide adapted from Dr. Sharon Milgram’s Resiliency workshop, NIH T 3, 2018. Mindset: The New Psychology of Success https: //psychology. stanford. edu/cdweck; http: //mindsetonline. com/
But, how do you KNOW what’s the right choice? Myth = there is ONE career that is right for you (fixed mindset). Reality = there are MANY careers that you would enjoy (growth mindset).
The Career Grant Proposal Treat your career exploration & planning like a grant: Background: What’s already known? What are your options? What do you like doing? Research Question: What kind of career would I enjoy? Hypothesis: A ____ career is the only one that I would enjoy. Experimental Design: How will you test your hypothesis? How will you gather data? How will you analyze your data? Don’t forget to determine potential pitfalls! Conclusions: Did you reject or accept your hypothesis? How will you reformulate your hypothesis? What are your future directions?
Exercise Two Career Grant Proposal 1. Complete the worksheet individually 2. Work in pairs/small groups to discuss each other’s plans 3. Provide feedback and suggestions for exploration (e. g. , people, resources, etc. )
