Career Development Verbal and Non-verbal Communication Skills
Primary Vocabulary • Nonverbal communication: a way of sending and receiving messages without using words, such as through body movements, facial expressions and eye contact. • Body language: the expression of thoughts, feelings, and emotions through body movements, such as facial expressions, gestures and body motions.
Supplementary Vocabulary • Intimate zone: from skin contact to 18 inches away from us. This zone is guarded closely by us and is reserved for close friends, relatives, and those we trust most. • Personal zone: begins at 18 inches to 4’feet. This space is for those that we like. The closer that they are to us the more we like them. • Social zone: This zone is 4’-12’. It is used for friendly gatherings of acquaintances. • Public zone: This zone is 12’ and beyond. Used by speakers and audiences. The further you are out, the less likely that you are interested in dialogue.

Body Orientation • The degree to which we face toward or away from someone with our body, feet, and head.
Posture • It furnishes information about how we feel about ourselves and others nonverbally.
Face • It is the most obvious channel of expressing emotions.
Hands, Legs and Feet • They are better indicators of how we truly feel because we are less likely to try to change or control these when hiding our feelings.

How we say words: • The way we say things (tone of voice, emphasis) portrays different meanings of those exact same words.
