Career Development Project Jessica Caputo
Contribution to the World • Being an English major opens the world up to so many opportunities for you. You could be a teacher, a lawyer, a journalist, etc. . . • In my case I want to contribute my knowledge of English into being a lawyer and putting people who are guilty behind bars. I want to be able to help people who have been hurt because of criminals. No one deserves to see the person who hurt them on the streets or in a store it can trigger certain things and cause PTSD. I want the victims to be able to live as close to a normal life as they can, and this is the first step to that.
How Will I Go About Making This Contribution • I will go about this by going to law school and study in becoming a prosecutor. After attending law school, I will try to find a good law firm and apply there for a job. I want to work at a well-known law firm so I'm able to help more clients than I would at just an average law firm. • Two English courses that will help me in the future are Rethinking Modern American Literature and Studies of English. Rethinking Modern American Literature has helped me figure out how to read between the lines of a story and get to the deeper meaning of what it means. Studies of English has helped me figure out the deeper meaning of the English language which in the future can help when reading certain laws in law school.
How Will I Go About Making This Contribution • Two general education courses that have helped me are Language Acquistion and Creating Language. Both courses have helped me understand the English language in a deeper way just as Studies of English has. Another thing that Creating Language has taught me is the history of the English language. • One extra-curricular that will help me with becoming a lawyer is student government. This can help me further my understanding of certain laws and the government system.
Meaningful Advice • Some meaningful advice I got was from my old advisor Gillian Benedetti. When I was switching my majors, she told me to work hard and don't stop doing the absolute best to obtain my goals of becoming a lawyer. • While interviewing professors the meaningful advice I got was from Meg Petersen and she told me how she finished college faster than the four years it takes for someone to finish an undergraduate. She told me to enjoy the moments I have at college and take the four years to finish it because these are years you can never get back.
How Will This Course Help You In The Future • In my opinion learning about the different subjects in "The Theory Toolbox" has helped me tremendously in reading and working with different types of articles and/or texts. This can help while reading different types of laws in my future career. • Close and distant reading has also helped me learn how to read between the lines and look at the bigger picture of the text.
