Career Day A power point presentation to initiate middle and high school students to engineering and electrotechnology with a particular interest in electrical engineering and technology and to introduce them to IEEE Canada 11/22/2020 Jump to first page
What Is Engineering n n 11/22/2020 IEEE Region 7 n Engineering is the application of mathematical and scientific principles to solve a problem with minimum cost to the owner. Engineering is an iterative process. The engineer is educated as a scientist, a mathematician and a problem solver. The technologist is trained in the practical aspects of the field. The engineer and technologist are always SAFETY conscious minimizing risks to life and limb. Jump to first page
Minimum Cost n n n Scientists demonstrate that certain processes work. Engineers make this process work as fast as practical with a minimum of resources (materials and labour). Engineers solve problems by analyzing malfunctions to correct deficiencies and restore properation. 11/22/2020 n IEEE Region 7 Technologists often work side by side with engineers although many provide independent services. Safety n n 11/22/2020 n IEEE Region 7 Buildings must be designed to minimize risk of injury. Bridges must be designed to withstand most credible risks. Roads must be designed to minimize hazards. Machines must be built to operate safely. All designs must include an ample safety factor. Jump to first page
Iterative Process n A design is done taking all available variables into account to n solve the problem efficiently. The project is built and commissioned into service. n 11/22/2020 IEEE Region 7 n Any shortcomings are brought back to design for re-evaluation. Shortcomings are corrected and recommissioned as needed keeping cost in mind. Jump to first page
Iterative Process… An Example n n Early computers were large, slow, difficult to program and used much energy. The Transistor was invented allowing the energy hungry Vacuum tube to be made obsolete. n Large Computing Centre Mainframes gradually gave way to minicomputers, and finally personal computers… Altair 88, ZX 81, Commodore PET, Vic 20 and Commodore 64, when the IBM and its clones hit the street. 11/22/2020 IEEE Region 7 n PC The IBM PC was a Standard imitated by many other manufacturers which, by competition, forced the computer completely out of the box and into your hands in the last decade. Education n the chosen discipline of practice. 11/22/2020 n IEEE Region 7 Engineering is usually a 5 year program at most Canadian Universities. Co-Operative programs with industry can give engineering students practical experience in the field. Engineering Education usually includes a core program and electives depending on Technologists’ and Technicians’ programs are about 3 and 2 years respectively in community colleges. IEEE Canada is Region 7 of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers The IEEE is the largest educational institution in the world n The IEEE is the largest single publisher of educational material in the world n n IEEE Xplore Contains: unearly 900, 000 Articles uincluding 11/22/2020 u 2 85, 000 from 1952 to 1987 million PDF files viewed each month IEEE Region 7 Jump to first page
The Logo n n The IEEE logo represents the form of Benjamin Franklin’s kite The symbol of the two arrows inside the kite represent the Right Hand Rule for the direction of the magnetic field around a wire carrying current n 11/22/2020 Grasp the wire with the right hand, the thumb pointing in the direction of the current. The fingers will curl around the wire in the direction of the magnetic field. Jump to first page
