Nontraditional Careers and Workplace Issues n n When you begin a career, you will learn that there are many issues that can arise in a workplace. n Some issues will be minor, while some will be major. Major workplace issues: n Discrimination: the unfair treatment of a person or group based on age, gender, race or religion n Sexual harassment: Unwanted, repeated behavior or communication that bothers, annoys, frightens, or stresses another person. n Harassment can take on many forms. It is more than just repeatedly asking someone on a date, it can be constantly criticizing someone and being overly critical

Nontraditional Careers and Workplace Issues n Both discrimination and sexual harassment are illegal and should not be tolerated. n The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prevents an employer from using race, skin color, religion, gender, or national origin as a reason to promote, demote, hire or fire n The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prevents an employer from discriminating based on age or physical disability
