CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM EQ: How does our blood flow?
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM • The cardiovascular system carries needed substances to cells and carries waste products away from cells. • Blood contains cells that fight disease
DELIVERING MATERIALS • Blood carries oxygen from your lungs to your other body cells • Blood carries glucose your cells use to produce energy
REMOVING WASTE • Picks up waste from cells ●Cells pass CO 2 into the blood where it is carried to the lungs to be exhaled
FIGHTING DISEASE • Transports cells that attack diseasecausing microorganisms
HEART • A hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body. ●Pushes blood through the vessels of the cardiovascular system
The muscles of the heart in action
STRUCTURE • • Septum: wall of tissue that separates the right and left sides of the heart Each side has two chambers Atrium: upper chambers that receives blood that comes to the heart ● Ventricle: lower chambers that pump blood out of the heart ● • Valve: flap of tissue that prevents blood from flowing backwards
FORCE OF THE VENTRICLES • Contraction of left ventricle exerts more force than the contraction of the right. ● Right Ventricles pumps blood only to the lungs ● Left ventricle pumps blood throughout the body
REGULATION OF HEARTBEAT • Pacemaker: group of cells located in the right atrium that sends out signals that contracts the heart muscle ● Receives messages about body’s oxygen needs • Adjusts heart rate to accommodate
Draw and label this diagram
TWO LOOPS Arteries: blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart • Capillaries: narrow blood vessels where substances are exchanged between blood and body cells • Veins: carry blood back to the heart •
FUN FACT!!! Blue Whale: A blue whale heart is the size of a Mini Cooper car and can weigh about 2, 000 pounds!
FUN FACT!!! • Its heartbeat can be detected 2 miles away! ● People can crawl through it’s arteries!
Reflection questions on Natural selection In what ways could the heart be less efficient? Why is our heart located in the part of the body that is resides in? What body systems does the heart work with? What problems do you speculate occurred in the history of human kind that forced our hearts to be so strong? What mutations do you imagine happened to our hearts over millions of years of living near the wild rivers and oceans?
TAKE-AWAYS (WRITE DOWN AS SUMMARY) • Blood flow is in a 2 loop system • Blood carries more than gases-it carries wastes and cells to help fight disease • Gas exchange occurs at the lungs AND the capillaries
