Carbon Lab The Carbon Cycle
Cycles • Cycle – a series of events that happens over and over again • Matter moves through ecosystems in continuous cycles – never created or destroyed ▫ Water ▫ Carbon ▫ Nitrogen
Carbon Cycle Notes (pg. 43 of Notebook) • Carbon is found in all living things • Plants take in carbon dioxide during photosynthesis to make food. • People and animals take in carbon from food (plants or animals that eat plants). • People and animals release carbon dioxide when they use energy from food (cellular respiration) • In the oceans, living things take in carbon from carbon dioxide dissolved in water. • Burning wood and fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere
Testing for Carbon • To find out if an element, such as carbon, is present, scientists use chemical tests. • To test for carbon, an acid, such as vinegar, can be used. • The vinegar will react with the calcium carbonate to produce carbon dioxide gas.
Testing for Carbon 1. Use the mortal and pestle to crush the chalk into powder and pour into container (take turns). 2. Record the mass of the crushed chalk. 3. Record the mass of the vinegar. 4. Pour the vinegar into the chalk container. 5. Observe and complete (4 -9) on your lab worksheet.
Chemical Reaction Formula • What type of reaction have you observed? • The reaction was chemical. (Chalk) (Vinegar)
