Carbon Cycle Earth Systems Carbon All living organisms
Carbon Cycle Earth Systems
Carbon • • • All living organisms are made of carbon. Carbon compounds can be solid, liquid, or gas. Because of this, carbon can help form minerals, be found in organisms, and be dissolved in water or carried through the atmosphere. http: //www. heroes. uk. net/wpcontent/uploads/footprint. png
Carbon Movement • • Carbon atoms continually move through living organisms, the oceans, the atmosphere, and the crust of the planet. This is known as the Carbon Cycle. http: //www. edinburghgardenschool. com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/carbon-cycle. jpg
Move In or Out… • • • Carbon may be stored for extended periods (Sink) Carbon may be released into the atmosphere (source) Objects that trigger a source to release carbon (release agent)
Sink = where carbon is stored • • Long-lived trees All living and dead organisms • Limestone • Plastics • Organic matter buried deep underground (this is what forms our fossil fuels- as it decomposes over millions of years) http: //www. topnotchknox. com/wpcontent/uploads/2016/01/beautiful-trees-4. jpg https: //www. futurereadysingapore. com/content/dam/ frs/2016 -articles/the-new-plastics-economy/the-newplastics-economy-1600 x 810. jpg
Largest Sink = Ocean • • CO 2 passes into water from atmosphere. Ocean plants (like phytoplankton) use CO 2 for photosynthesis. Some animals use CO 2 to make shells. When animals die, carbon is deposited into sediments at the bottom of the ocean. https: //sustainabledevelopment. un. org/content/images/image 230_1223. jp g
Source = where carbon is released • • Burning of fossil fuels and organic matter Weathering/Erosion of limestone Decomposition by fungi and bacteria Respiration of living things http: //reptools. rutgers. edu/Carbon. Hypermedia/final 12. jpg
Largest Source = Burning of Fossil Fuels • • • Coal = electricity (heating) and factories Natural Gas = heating water and homes, cooking http: //18407 -presscdn-014. pagely. netdna-cdn. com/wpcontent/uploads/2017/02/airpollution. jpg http: //static. oprah. com/images/food /201001/gas-stove-350 x 263. jpg Oil = cars, plastics http: //www. chemistryland. com/CHM 107 Lab /Exp 02_Exhaust/Exhaust. Other Sources = Releasing Agents • Volcanic Activity • Forest Fires • • Combustion https: //www. rdmag. com/sites/rdmag. com/files/Volcanic_Predictions_440. jpg Human Activities (agriculture, deforestation, and building cities) http: //cdn. isciencetimes. com/data/images/full/2013/06/13/4302 -black-forest-fire-colorado. jpg
