Carbon Capture and Sequestration Some Thoughts about the
Carbon Capture and Sequestration Some Thoughts about the UK F. Starr : Claverton: October 2008
Need for New Coal Fired Steam Plant in UK • Will replace obsolete 1960’s generating capacity • 43% versus 35% efficiency so cuts coal demand by c. 20% • Gas becoming too expensive • Required for two shifting duties to support nuclear base capacity • Required as back up for wind and solar renewables
Issues for the UK with Carbon Capture Plant? Will add to costs and reduce flexibility but plant design is not a problem North Sea Storage • Most proposed plants a long way from disused gas fields • CO 2 for Enhanced Oil Recovery is more difficult than it seems • Economics demand three base load CCS plants to each pipeline Impact of UK and European CCS on Coal Demand Global Warming
Efficiency and Coal Demand Issues Plant Efficiency without CCS – 43% in UK Plant Efficiency with CCS – 35% in UK CCS increases coal demand by plus 20%
Coal declines to a quarter of 1990 output Lignite by a third
EU and Imported Coal for Power Generation EU Lignite in decline
Extra Coal Needed because of CO 2 Capture EU and Imported Coal EU Lignite in Decline
Extra coal imports because of CO 2 capture 2000 2010 2020 Year 2030
UK Situation By about 2020 we will be importing about 50 million tonnes of coal CCS will require an extra 10 million tonnes @ £ 50 tonne= £ 500 million World output of coal will be about 5000 million tonnes per annum UK will spend an extra half a billion to reduce CO 2 emission from coal fuelled electricity by 1%
World Situation If CCS is introduced worldwide this will increase demand by 1000 million tonnes per annum This is equivalent to the USA coal output Or Half the output of China Coal producers are very keen on CCS!!!
If You were the UK Government …………………WHAT WOULD YOU DO? ?
