Parana is the name of a state in Brazil. It has come to represent freedom and is used symbolically in many capoeira songs. Aruande and Luanda (the capital of Angola) are often used similarly representing freedom, or even heaven, and often carry a feeling of nostalgia. Of course this would be a common theme among slaves singing of desired freedoms. What types of freedom might modern capoeiristas be seeking? Parana is a place which got the meaning of freedom for African slaves in Brazil. During the war with Paraguay, in the XIX century, slaves has the opportunity to fight with their country, Brazil and become citizens: thus freeing them from slavery. Parana state was a crossing point to join or not to join the war, many slaves used this as an opportunity to flee their bondage without joining the war. Parana therefore became a powerful and iconic song, representing a slaves bid for freedom. Through the song themes of freedom, choice and struggle for personal liberty are raised and can be discussed with students. What kind of choices for personal freedom and dignity do students encounter today? In the capoeira game there is no winner and there is no loser. To play in the game is to avoid conflict and find creative solutions to problems. How do students creatively deal with conflict in their lives, and find solutions that do not use violence or aggression today?
