Position of the Boy Scouts of America Belief in God is an essential part of the Scouting program to build character and instill positive values in youth. However, BSA does NOT promote a specific image of God, but God may be interpreted in a variety of ways, depending on the family’s faith. Historically this interfaith view has often been presented in Scouting literature, whenever the Scout Law ("A Scout is Reverent") and the Scout Oath "to do my Duty to God" are discussed. Interfaith Considerations. Basic Guidelines Ø Ø “Interfaith service” means that everyone is welcome, and everyone should feel comfortable with what is: spoken, sung, read, or otherwise imparted during the service. Specific names should be avoided (such as Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, or Holy Spirit) since they are religion-specific. Male pronouns (such as Father God, Heavenly Father, or His) should be avoided as they may be disrespectful in some religions. CAC Fast Start Chaplain Training 33

Interfaith Considerations Basic Guidelines At multi-unit Scouting events (district camporees, Order of the Arrow fellowships), services for various faith groups is not practical. A single interfaith religious service is ideal, easing the burden on planners and on facilities. The name of the service should be clear—interfaith service, allfaiths service, or Scout’s Own Service (but interfaith is the preferred term). Be sure everyone understands that the service is nonsectarian and, thus, all are invited. The terms nondenominational , interdenominational , or ecumenical are NOT the same as interfaith; they are terms that typically denote forms of Christian worship. CAC Fast Start Chaplain Training 36
