NSW – Cities and Regional Centres The capital city of New South Wales is Sydney. It is located on the east coast of the state. The city of Sydney covers an area of over 12 000 square kilometres. Other major cities in New South Wales include Newcastle (to the north) and Wollongong (to the south). VIC – Cities and Regional Centres The capital city of Victoria is Melbourne. It is located on the south coast of the state. The city of Melbourne covers an area of over 9000 square kilometres. Another major city in Victoria is Geelong (to the south west). Victoria has several regional centres including Ballarat, Bendigo, Wodonga, Mildura, Shepparton, Morwell, Warragul and Warnambool.
