Measuring Capacity When we pour any liquid in a container we can measure its capacity. We can use various containers to measure capacity. E. g. bottles, cups, spoons Capacity of the same container seems different if different measures are used. E. g. a bucket has a capacity of 15 glasses but can also have a capacity of 10 jugs since jugs are bigger than glasses.

Capacity Activity: Provide student with a 1 litre jug filled with water and 1 litre carton of milk. Do not tell the student that they both have a capacity of 1 litre. Give the student a cup. Ask him/her to estimate/guess how many cups of water the jug can hold. Then let him/her try it out by pouring the water from the jug to the cup (either provide the student with more than 1 identical cups or else provide the student with a bowl so that he/she can pour the water from the cup to the bowl. ) Ask questions e. g. Where you correct? Did you guess the correct amount of cups? Where you close to the correct answer? Do the same procedure with the carton of milk. Ask the student: What do you notice from your answers of the jug of water and the carton of milk?
