CANVAS 101 Introduction to the CANVAS LMS

Logging In and Looking Around Do you see all of your Powerschool Courses? Do you have a “Start a New Course” Button? Renaming your Course Cards and changing Their color. Left Navigation

Cleaning Up Your Courses You can hide courses like Homeroom, Recess, Work and Study Habits to keep your Dashboard Streamlined. Click on “All Courses” and then star or unstar each To hide or display them. This is really convenient after a few years of enrolling In various CANVAS courses yourself for PD or other reasons!!!

Let’s Dive In!!!! CANVAS encourages you To create Modules right from The start. Modules help you Organize your course. I tend to use modules as units of study. Mrs. Rapier gives each Module the title of a book they’ll read and study. Add existing content is for Those who are moving Material from another LMS To CANVAS. Look at the navigation links o Left-even though they are grayed out you can still click on them.

Let’s Add a Module! Publish Everything If You Want Your Students To See it!!! Now’s a good Time to talk about Student View in Settings…

Let’s Add An Assignment! Yes, you can add things Like Quizzes and Discussions. Feel free to play around. Today let’s stick with an Assignment. Don’t forget to Publish!!!!

Creating Your Assignment… Lot’s of Options Here: 1. Those tabs on the right. 2. Kind of like a word processer. 3. How do you want kids to show their learning? Let’s look at that student view Again-It’s in Settings

The CANVAS Commons Feel free to search the Commons For assignments, modules, even Entire courses you can pull in To your CANVAS account. Currently we are looking for all of the “Words Their Way” Sorts and Such to Create a CANVAS course for us! I won’t go in to detail about it today, but Feel free to look in there and see what All is available. Feeling adventurous-go to the Help Feature and click on CANVAS Guides To learn how to import!

Invite Me To Your Classroom ◦ I did 3 CANVAS lessons with several teachers over the course of a week last year. ◦ The “Help” feature. ◦ Courses in “the Commons” like Kungfu CANVAS you can enroll in to learn own your own.
