Mission • The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer.

History • The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) was officially formed in 1938, but the seeds for the organization were planted back in 1929 when the Saskatchewan Medical Association formed the country’s first cancer committee. • By the time people consulted a doctor, their cancer was advanced and their chances for survival were decreased. • Cancer committees in other provincial medical.

Goals • At the Canadian Cancer Society, we are committed to improving and saving lives. • That’s why we are always looking for new ways to prevent cancer, find it early and treat it more successfully. • We educate people on how to reduce their risk of cancer and how some types of cancer can be found early through screening tests.

Statistics • It is estimated that: 206, 200 new cancer diagnoses and 80, 800 deaths from cancer occurred in Canada in 2017. • Lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer accounted for about half of all cancer diagnoses and deaths. • About 1 in 2 Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetimes and 1 in 4 will die of the disease. • 60% of Canadians diagnosed with cancer will survive at least 5 years after their diagnosis.
