Descendant • A person who is descended (comes) from a certain ancestor. ( A blood relative)

Loyalist • • An American who supported Britain during the American Revolution. In general a person who supports the current government.

Dominion • • A self governing nation. Canada became a dominion in 1867, but the British still ruled over foreign matters.

Nationalism • A strong feeling of loyalty to ones nation.

Quebec Act n A law that gave the French people in the British Colony the right to keep their own laws, language and Roman Catholic religion.

The Early Settlers n n Early people came from Asia over land bridge that connected North America and Asia. ( This is the first migration 25, 000 years ago) Inuit settled in Northern Region or Arctic Isles. ( This is the second migration 5, 000 years ago) Appalachian Region, St. Lawrence Lowlands and Southern Canadian Shield-Algonkins, Hurons, Ottawas, and Iroqouis. They interacted through trade. They all shared a common resource- trees Interior Plains-Assiniboines and Blackfeet-they hunted and lived off of the Bison.

Early Settlers n n Native Canadians in Western Canada were the Haidas and Nootkas. They used the thick forest for their natural resources. (Dugouts) Native Canadians in the Northern Canadian Shield where the Chipewyans and Crees. They relied on hunting small animals.

French and British n n First Europeans to arrive were Vikings. They landed in Newfoundland (AD 1000) 1535 French explorer Jacques Cartier claimed the northern land for France and he named it “Kanata” meaning groups of huts. 1608 - First French Settlement –Quebec 1754 -1763 French and Indian War between France and English. At the end of the war they sign a treaty giving British Control over New France which they named Quebec.

Canada Becomes a Nation 1780 -1850 - Canada’s period of growth. n 1791 - British Divided Quebec Upper Canada (Ontario-English Speaking) Lower Canada (Quebec-French Speaking) n British North American Act 1867 - Canada becomes the Dominion of Canada n Over the next 100 yrs British and France Colonies became provinces. n 1982 - “Constitution Act”- Canada’s Independence was complete. n
