Viking children! CHILDREN IN THE VIKING PERIOD
Hi there I am Mr Ginger today I will help you learn about Viking children can you tell your teacher what you know about Viking children and after the lesson we can see how much you have learn!
The children of today go to nursery and school when their mothers and fathers are at work. But what did Viking children do? Were they sent to school ? Did they learn to read or write when they were old enough ? So many questions
The Viking were people from Scandinavia. Family life was very important to Vikings, everyone including kids over the age of 5 had a role to play in Viking life. Facts on Viking children’s names Children were usually named after family ancestors, famous Vikings or Gods. A boys last name is usually linked to their father. The Vikings were extremely strong and despised weakness, if a baby or young child was ill or considered a burden on the family it would be left to perish or thrown in the sea! FUN FACTS!!
Viking times !! Girls in the Viking girls would heed advice and guidance from their mother, learning how to live in their world and mastering the necessary skills and learning along the way. Cooking was a skill that would be essential to master, making Viking broth, brewing ale and even making cheese from goat milk. Spinning, weaving and clothes making were important too. Also repairing old clothes, and ensuring there was enough wool to keep their family warm in the cold winter.
Boys in the Viking times Even from a young age a Viking boy would have to learn how to take care of himself, both in a job role and also in a physical role. Vikings were farmers that just happened to also love working with their fathers, either as a helper to a craftsman, or as a farm hand to a farmer. The Viking boys would pick up skills and trades from their fathers and their extended families.
What jobs do you do to help your family? WASHING? FOLDING CLOTHES? HOOVERING? TIDYING UP? AFTER YOUR SELF?
Children’s toys in the Viking period Viking children must have played as all children do. Wooden toys have been found for example small ships , swords dolls and animal figures. Most of these were probably made for children to play with. But some objects were also useful to train children in various skills , which the children could use as adults , in work or in conflict.
