World War 1 • Over 100 years ago, in WW 1, many young men and some women went across the English Channel to France and Belgium to help fight against people who wanted to take our country away from us. The war lasted four years and many soldiers were killed. • The soldiers fought and lived in trenches. • What do you think that was like?
Then and now • On the next slides you will see pictures of what the trenches looked like during the war and what they look like now. • Chotting - use the Fantastics to make two word lists • One to describe the trenches then • One to describe the trenches now • We will use the word lists to write a poem
Then
Now
Then and now • Using your chottings and the Repetition lens, we are going to write a free verse poem • A free verse poem doesn’t rhyme and doesn’t have a rhythm. It does have a structure. • Use the structure below to write sentences comparing the pictures. We will write one verse together. Then, ……… Now, ……… Remember
Why do we have Remembrance Day? - I can explain who we are remembering on Remembrance Day - I can explain why we are remembering on Remembrance Day - I can use a digital device to design a medal for a hero This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-ND
Remembering • Many people were affected by the war. Mothers, children, grandparents were left behind without a father, husband, son or daughter. • Children were encouraged to help their mothers at home and to remember their fathers at war who were fighting for peace. • What do your parents do for you? What do other people do for you? • Why is it important that we remember?
• After the war all soldiers or their next of kin were given medals for bravery. After the war • You are going to design a medal, which can be given to a hero now. • Who would you design a medal for?
