Campus Infrastructure What is available and what are the plans.
Overview • • • State of the current Network on campus Current off campus connectivity Planned off campus connectivity Regional Initiatives National Initiatives
Current Campus Network • Fully redundant Gigabit Ethernet backbone. • Able to extend the Gigabit backbone to any building on campus as needed. • Able to provide Gigabit to the desktop in most buildings.
Research network connections • Our Current connection is an OC-3. • We are in the process of upgrading the Internet 2 connection to an OC-12. • This has been delayed by an issue obtaining access to the Internet 2 site in Kansas City. • I believe this will be resolved in the next week or so.
Regional Initiatives • MIDnet Inc. has issued an RFP for obtaining dark fiber in the Great Plains region. • There were 5 responders. • The evaluation of those responses is taking place right now. • If a bid is accepted and UNL participates we will have access to dark fiber by the end of 2006.
Regional Initiative Costs • We anticipate the first year costs to range from $600, 000 t 0 $750, 000. • Second year costs are estimated at $500, 000. • On-going costs will be much less.
National Initiatives • Abilene and NLR are merging their efforts. – Not yet clear exactly what this means to the connectors to Abilene or NLR • Hopi – Hybrid Optical Packet Infrastructure – Dynamic Optical Networking
Futures • With access to Dark Fiber we will be able to create, at little incremental cost, new connections for research projects as needed. • The time frame for these will be days and weeks, not months. • 10 Gigabit Ethernet on the Campus is possible with our infrastructure.
