Calling All Superheroes/Supervillans Alaya M
• The character debuted in Sensation Comics #1 (January 1942) and was created by Charleson and H. G. Peter. • Diana Prince was originally the name of a U. S. Army nurse who provided the primary alias for Princess Diana (Wonder Woman) of the Amazons. In January 1942, Princess Diana met Diana Prince, who was sobbing. When Wonder Woman asked her what was wrong, Prince explained that her fiance, Dan White, was in South America and she lacked the funds to go be with him. Noticing how similar they were in appearance, Wonder Woman paid Prince a large amount of money she had just earned from Al Kale's promotion of her bullets and bracelets routine; in exchange, Prince gave Wonder Woman her credentials and name. She later saved Steve from Axis forces. In 1972 Wonder Woman was the first standalone on the cover of Ms. Magazine She was also in a relationship with superman
• • Superman The character was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, high school students living in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1933. What some might not know is that Clark uses his journalism status to actually make real contributions to the paper. Even though Lois Lane is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Clark has tackled important issues as well. He has helped expose corruption and still help the little guy by not just physically keeping them safe, but protecting them from corporate greed. He would also take on mobs in using journalistic influence his earlier days. Jonathan Being raised byhis Pa Kent, young Clark learnedduring many valuable lessons. Kent, having been the small town farmer that he was, taught Clark the value of sticking up for the little man. He showed Clark that it was important to stand up for one’s self and to work hard for what Clark wanted. Undoubtedly, Jonathan Kent gave Clark an ideal to strive towards by introducing him to “The American Way. ” Jor-El, only having met his son for a moment before sending him off into the universe, had high hopes for his son and the legacy of his people who young Kal will hold on his shoulders. In newer versions of comics and film, Kal-El has an interactive hologram that allows him to speak to the late Jor-El. Here, Superman gets to ask his father questions and learn about the ideals and standards his father had for him. This expectation to carry-on the legacy of his people, and more importantly, live up to the standard his father had set for him, are what create a contemporary basis for his superhero alter-ego to act by. Jor-El taught Kal how to be “Super” while Jonathan Kent showed Clark what it was to be a “man. ” Together they created the world’s greatest hero, Superman.
batman • • • Bruce Wayne is named after Scottish hero Robert the Bruce and American Revolutionary hero Mad Anthony Wayne (who turns out to be an ancestor of Batman's, according to the comics). The initial Batman stories were especially violent. Batman had no compunction about carrying a gun or killing his foes. Only later did Batman develop a code in which he refused to do either of those things, lest he sink to the level of the man who killed his parents. Robin didn't show up until issue No 38. The young sidekick was the alter ego of Dick Grayson, part of a family of circus acrobats whose parents died in a high-wire accident. (It turned out that they'd been killed by mobsters who were shaking down the circus owner for protection money. ) Naturally, Bruce Wayne identified with Dick's plight and adopted him as his war
The flash • • • Has a secret brother; When a drunken doctor botched the delivery of the child from the wealthy Thawne family, he stole one of Nora Allen's twins and told her that her baby was a stillborn. In actual fact, he switched the children, and The Flash's brother didn't learn of his true parentage until years later. Filled with jealousy over the loving family Barry had growing up (compared to the abuse he suffered) Malcolm became Cobalt Blue and set out to rob his brother of his speeding abilities. When the villain started a campaign to wipe out his descendants, a feud was born between the Allen and Thawne families which would last for centuries. He died; Letting his nephew Wally West take over the mantle of The Flash, it appeared as if Barry Allen had finally found peace with the love of his life Iris West. However, he was soon dragged into the Crisis on Infinite Earths, and it was this which would lead to his death. Creating a speed vortex to stop the Anti-Monitor's plan to destroy the Earth with an antimatter cannon, the power proved to be too much for Barry's body, and he appeared to disintegrate. Weirdly, Barry's "death" transformed him into the lightning bolt which gave him his powers in the first place, but returned from the Speed Force over two decades later. Psychics cant read his mind; It's not just The Flash's body which moves fast; his mind is also capable of easily outpacing a regular person's. This helps him to figure out the best plan of attack as he races into battle, but also has an unusual side effect which provides the Scarlet Speedster with a very unique ability. One of The Flash's greatest foes is Gorilla Grodd, an intelligent gorilla with the power to control minds. He can't take over Barry Allen however as his mind simply runs too fast to be read or controlled, giving the hero a distinct advantage. This makes him unique in the Justice League, especially when the likes of Batman and Superman are easily swayed.
Harley quinn • • • Harley’s life is really pretty much an open book. She’s emotional, fiercely loyal to those she loves (like Poison Ivy and regrettably even the Joker), impulsive, and oh so whacko. When she was all but forgotten about, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Rocksteady Studios revived her in 2009 with the hit game Batman: Arkham Asylum, which saw Harley shed her black and red skintight jester’s outfit for a nurse’s getup instead That henchwoman was none other than Harley Quinn. She was only intended to be used for that one part of the episode just that time. However, fans reacted very strongly to Harley. They loved her quirky attitude and Brooklyn accent. Radomski and Timm wisely decided to listen to fan outcry, and Harley was soon written into future episodes of The Animated Series as a regular character. Oh, and Joker popped out of the cake anyway. As mentioned, when Harley was written into “Joker’s Favor” on The Animated Series, she wasn’t supposed to be on the hit cartoon ever again. What did Harley need with a backstory? It’s a wonder that she even had a name. At the height of the popularity of the animated Batman show, Paul Dini took the reigns and wrote Harley an origin story. Since Dini had worked on The Animated Series, he was able to mimic the art style with 100 percent accuracy. It’s no wonder then that the comic, named The Batman Adventures: Mad Love, won 1994’s “Best Single Story” Eisner Award.
• • Aquaman Beyond just talking to fish, Aquaman has a plethora of other abilities that have made him into a force to be reckoned with. Aquaman has a high level of invulnerability. Bullets have been shown to bounce off of him, not unlike his Justice League pal Superman. Many heroes, like Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man, feel a moral compunction not to kill. Aquaman is a bit different in this regard. While Aquaman tries to practice restraint and mercy, he has killed his enemies more than a few times. The brutality with which Aquaman doles out justice is unlike that of Batman, Cyborg, or the Flash. Aquaman has not just beaten his foes with his fists and trident, but has also directed sharks to rip apart his enemies. For a character that many consider to be campy, Aquaman has actually had devastating events in his life. He has had to learn to live with pain and deal with anguish, while continuing to not only lead Atlantis but to be a superhero as well. An event that has helped shape Aquaman’s determination over the years is the loss of his hand. In one variation of this, the villain Charybdis directs piranhas to eat it off. In other iterations, his hand is cut off by his nemesis Black Manta, but it all depends on which era of Aquaman you are reading. Despite the initial horror of losing his hand in such a violent way, Aquaman equips the missing limb with a harpoon.
Cyborg’s origin story, unlike many other characters in comics, has stayed pretty consistent over the years. It wasn’t until the New 52, when DC rebooted its entire universe in 2011, that Victor Stone’s origins were changed slightly. Victor Stone was a star high school football player with incredible intelligence. Not only did he possess natural smarts, but his parents, scientists at DC’s S. T. A. R. Labs, also subjected him to an experiment that would possibly boost his intellect. It worked, but only increased the animosity growing between Victor and his parents. Cyborg is notable for history as a member of the Teen Titans. In the comics, he spent decades on the team as one of the central characters of the acclaimed Teen Titans cartoon. But the Teen Titans weren’t just a way that he could use his abilities to help people, they were also his family. Due to the self-consciousness he felt about his cybernetic enhancements, Victor Stone became an outsider. Luckily, the Teen Titans’ roster was filled with fellow freaks and outcasts. These outcasts became Vic’s true family and it was here on this team that Cyborg finally found his calling. Not only did Victor’s origin slightly change with the New 52, but his position in the DC Universe changed as well. Now, once given mechanical parts by his father, Vic becomes a founding member of the Justice League, joining Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and the Flash. Though Victor is still young, his maturity helps him stand tall among these six other icons. Thanks to the Mother Box technology and his knowledge of the New Gods, Cyborg is an integral figure in the Justice League’s plan to stop Darkseid’s invasion of Earth.
• • • Black canary Green Arrow and Black Canary tied the knot, but not without complications. In the comics, she actually married a shapeshifter impersonating Arrow, who then tried to kill her on her honeymoon. n the comics, the original Black Canary was actually Laurel's mom. She found Detective Lance, married him and they had kids. Dinah Drake Lance being the original character (Flash Comics #86 - 1947), Dinah Laurel Lance is our current super-heroine. always saw her as a Green Arrow compatriot? Not a Flash friend! First appearing in Flash Comics #86 (August 1947), she was originally from Earth-2. Known to be one of DC's earliest superheroines, she wasn't paired with Green Arrow until 1960!
Green Arrow • • • Created in 1940 by Morton Weisinger and George Papp, Oliver Queen was first introduced into the DC Universe in issue #73 of More Fun Comics because publishers were nervous about relying too heavily on Batman and Superman in their comics. With Batman being such a successful and popular character, the publishers wanted a hero that was close enough to Batman in order to give the readers the same sense of adventure, but also giving the Dark Knight some time out of the spotlight. Not only did the Green Arrow have a lot of the same tech as Batman, but his character traits mirrored those of Bruce Wayne during the 40 s. Both had their alter-ego centric cars and devices that aided them in their crusades against crime-lords and drug dealers. As Batman grew to take on villains that were larger than life, Green Arrow has always focused more on the street-level crime-fighting of an everyday vigilante. It wasn’t until the ’ 60 s that Green Arrow was able to come out from under the shadow of Batman and really begin to grow into his own character. Although they still have similarities, Ollie has thrived by remaining a street-level vigilante.
• • • The joker Was suppose to die after his first appearance; he Joker made his first appearance in the pages of Batman #1 in 1940. However, Bob Kane didn't have any far reaching plans for the now iconic villain and wanted to kill him off during his debut, something which the book's editor Whitney Ellsworth was adamant should not happen As a result, he forced the writer to include a hastily thrown together panel showing The Joker coming back to life. This was despite the inclusion of an earlier one which had depicted the villain accidentally stabbing himself. It's strange that Kane was reluctant to save The Joker, especially after he had fought studio writer Bill Finger for the chance to introduce the villain when he dismissed the concept as being "too clownish". HAS no interest in bruce wayne although he knows he’s batman; Whether or not Commissioner Gordon knows that Bruce Wayne is Batman has been teased for decades, but the answer to The Joker probably being aware of the Caped Crusader's dual identity is more solid. He has no interest in the man beneath the mask; he cares only about Batman. Of course, that hasn't stopped the Clown Prince of Crime from digging up the bodies of Martha and Thomas Wayne or invading the Batcave a number of times. In fact, on a recent trip to the Dark Knight's underground hideout - which he initially discovered after hiding beneath Batman's boat - The Joker chopped off Alfred's hand! In a twisted way, The Joker believes that he's making Batman a better hero by constantly plaguing him, and that Bruce Wayne is simply a meaningless disguise he uses. A sidekick called ‘gaggy’ ; The 40 s and 50 s were a much different time, and that made it ok for The Joker to have a little person called Gagsworth "Gaggy" Gagsworthy as his sidekick. Now politically incorrect panels featured Gaggy being punched in the face by Batman while riding on The Joker's shoulders and doing dances to entertain his clowning chum. He would return years later to confront Harley Quinn for taking the fun loving Joker and moulding him into a psychopath. As you might expect, he hasn't found his way into "The New 52" Universe just yet, and probably never will.
