Call to Action Preparing for the Behavioral Health
Call to Action: Preparing for the Behavioral Health Surge Dr. Paul Simeone & Stacey Cook August 17, 2020 #3400. 159 Rev. 11/16
Call to Action: Preparing for the Behavioral Health Surge The Call to Action was started as a grass-roots effort by Dr. Simeone and Stacey Cook to address the surge of behavioral health needs the community brought on by the pandemic. To do this, we asked many of our friends in the community to join forces for one of our most collaborative efforts to date. Right away the answer was clear. We would provide free services to a community ravaged by unemployment, underemployment, lack of insurance, and severe financial strain. To us, this project is a moral imperative that “walks the talk” of good population health practice and responsible community care -taking. The longest journey begins with a single step. Let us walk this new path together. 1

All Other Healthy Lee BH Projects: • Teacher Appreciation Contest: This event focuses on our local teacher’s mental wellbeing. Last year, teacher’s had to quickly adapt to a fully virtual platform in a matter of days. Students are now sharing stories, artwork, videos and songs to nominate a special teacher in their lives. The week before school starts, teacher’s will be offered discounts for foods, goods and services from local vendors. In addition, the lucky winner will receive donated schoolroom supplies and a grand prize courtesy of Park Royal Hospital. • Normal Is Overrated EBT Donations Event: Healthy Lee, KMM, Midwest Food Bank and Costco have partnered to support a student-led community event. The plan is for families to donate funds from their pre-loaded EBT cards to restock the school food pantries. The Normal Is Overrated students have been hard at work promoting this event and sharing details of their main event on September 12 th. 6
All Other Healthy Lee BH Projects Cont. Normal Is Overrated 2020: This is the 2 nd annual event for Normal Is Overrated. We have three new students in the supportive/planning roles of the event this year and four new student speakers, gearing up to share their experiences navigating mental health issues. This year’s event will be held on a fully virtual platform. First Responder Resiliency Webinar: This is their 2 nd event in a series, to help support first responders and their families. The next event is scheduled for August 21 st at 10: 00 am. In addition to the projects mentioned, we also have two more subcommittees dedicated to maternal mental health, and most recently, minority mental health. These subcommittees are working to identify projects to better support our community in addressing these very important issues. 7
