PSSC Meeting November 25, 2019 In attendance: Donald Alward (Chair), Michelle Thomas , Donna Godfrey (Principal), Emily Colpitts (Teacher Representative), Lisa Steeves, Shelly Wilbur, and Laura Harrison (Student Representative). Donald called the meeting to order at 6: 32 pm. Agenda was approved with the removal of the DEC report. Declaration forms were distributed to a new member. Donald read a letter that was sent to the District office to get the potholes fixed in the bus unloading zone. Donna reported that an individual has visited the school and assessed the situation. The Green Paper discussion was tabled until the next meeting.
Donna presented the Principals Report: · Parent portal is available for all students for historical grades. · Acceptable Computer Use Agreement was distributed and discussed. · Media Coverage policy was discussed. · 70% of students have returned forms. · Students will lose computer access if forms are not returned. · Vision Care Assistance has been provided for 2 students from FYI doctors. · School Improvement Planning uses data from Data Warehouse. · Effective Schools Framework is used when developing the School Improvement plan. · Our School chose Systemic School planning – Indicator #6 to focus on. · The group brainstormed current indicators of inclusive school culture. · New Brunswick Student Wellness Survey was discussed. · Our School Survey results were discussed.
Laura presented the Student Council Report: · The remembrance day ceremony was held. · A guest speaker presented on leadership and participation. · A member of student council went to a leadership conference in Fredericton. · The following upcoming events are planned in December o Hot Chocolate on Friday o Spirit Assembly o Theme Week o Breakfast on last Friday before Christmas o Selling lollipops as a fundraiser o School is putting a float in the parade o Four students went to see Obama. o Fill the Bus Campaign has started.
Emily presented the Teacher’s Report: o I “cubed” project was discussed o Ben Kelly successfully requested grant funding for an “Art Smart” project. o Mike Robertson invited a guest to educate his students about the apprenticeship pathway in the trades sector. o Mike & Michelle Robertson have been organizing our breakfast program. o Dan Steeves is trying to bring in the Teen Challenge group to discuss drug addiction, and recovery with the PDCP groups next semester. o Clubs and Extra-Curriculars include: § Art & Design Club § Dragon Boat § Grad Council § Envirothon § Prom § Yearbook § Magic The Gathering Card Game Club § An activity group occurs during last break in the afternoon The meeting adjourned at 8: 10 pm.

STEM – SCIENCE, TECH, ENGINEERING, MATH § STEMPATHY § 97 000 students in NB … 31 400 of these students come from families below the poverty line. § When working with students and families with financial struggles – EMPATHY is an essential skill. § Students in Mr. Kelly’s classes complete STEM experiences that are primarily designed to be empathetic. § Caledonia Regional won the top North American STEM Programming for 2020 as announced by FETC – Future in Education Technology Conference in Miami in January 2020. § “Not every initiative we undertake is rich with empathy, but please know that every single initiative is designed first and foremost with empathy in mind. If it fits, we go with it. If it doesn’t fit, we still complete an otherwise engaging experience. ” Mr. Kelly

6. 1 SCHOOL LEADERS ARE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN CREATING AND FURTHERING AN INCLUSIVE SCHOOL CULTURE § Explanation: In schools with a strong culture of inclusion, leaders actively promote a cultural shift; planning and actions are centered on the best interests of students. § Examples of Mrs. Godfrey’s support include: § Active chair of the school based ESS team - Handout § Ensure PLPs and Individualized Behavior Support Plans are developed, monitored, and adjusted § § § accordingly. Provide support to staff and students dealing with issues between school and community. Advocate on behalf of the school to obtain the supports necessary to support students. Ensure that student placement is inclusive – Learning Center / Partial Programming / TESS Ensure transportation issues are addressed. Ensure that sport teams, clubs are school organizations are equitable. CAT has a vision for inclusion supporting diverse experiences, perspective and knowledge.

6. 2 STAFF MEMBERS ARE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN CREATING AND FURTHERING AN INCLUSIVE SCHOOL CULTURE § Explanation: Caledonia Staff are actively involved in promoting inclusion at Caledonia. Active involvement extends beyond occasional events and is evident within daily conversations, lessons, and routines (ex. Discussing family structures, cultural identities) § I would encourage members of the PSSC to identify and discuss inclusive attributes presented within Teacher’s Report presented at each PSSC meeting. § At Caledonia, staff § Support the involvement of all students within the learning environment – STEM § Recognize accomplishments and contributions of diverse populations within their daily lessons § Respect / Strength based approaches – Nutrition § Peer and Buddy support – Reading Tutor 120 § Advocate on behalf of students assisting them overcome barriers to learning and development

6. 3 STUDENTS ARE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN CREATING AND FURTHERING AN INCLUSIVE SCHOOL CULTURE § As PSSC members listen to the Student Report presented at each PSSC meeting, I encourage you to identify and discuss elements of an inclusive school culture. § Promote awareness at Caledonia – The Wellness Wheel § Understand the behavioral expectations of the school § Have developed leadership groups – Student Council § Members demonstrate a welcoming environment § Do morning announcements § Partner with other clubs in the school § Recognize and celebrate accomplishments of groups and clubs
ADMIN, STAFF &STUDENTS ARE WORKING ON THE FOLLOWING INCLUSIVE ELEMENTS … § Student Entrance § Deeper personalized career planning for High School students § MS Activity Block – Animal Therapy, physical activity, board games, knitting – reflection of student voice and choice § Developing Leadership skills / Looking closely at Grade 9 § Student investment in their own educational experience.
SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO HIGH SCHOOL SCHEDULING § 9/10 Curriculum Document § Grade 10 – September 2020 – 18 credits required § 2 of these credits must be Math § NFR 10 will be considered a credit and a pre-req for the Foundations 11 Math Pathway § NRF 10 also offered online February 2021 § Dual Credit Math with NBCC § Life Role Development is expanded : Career Es 110 / Entrepreneurship 120 / Culinary Tech 110 120 / Applied Tech & Skilled Trades Courses at the 110 120 level, Nutrition & Healthy Living 120 / Health Care 110 / Goals, Growth & Grit 120
CHANGES CONTINUED § Additional Elective Courses § Promote learner agency and support personalized learning. § Designed by the student with support of their teachers and / or mentors in the school or community (local / global) § Personal Interest Course 1 & 2 § In depth study of a specific problem § Support to the Calls to Action in the Truth and Reconciliation Recommendations § Financial Literacy § Additional Language § Career Planning & My Blueprint § Locally Developed Courses & Independent Studies § NB Virtual Learning Centre – Online § Idea Center These changes to curriculum are significant and support flexibility to personalize the current credit structure. They support student voice and choice.
JOINT PSSC WITH RIVERVIEW FAMILY OF SCHOOLS § March 24 th – As opposed to March 23 rd as scheduled § Round Table Discussion – 15 minutes - focused on 4 key topics: 1. Mental Health 2. Belonging – school and community 3. Conflict and peer engagement 4. Technology – the use and overall effects One individual will compose a summary of all topics to be sent out to participants. What can we pull from these discussions that will support our school improvement planning? Review on April 20, 2020.
